We are very close to the end of a three year DnD campaign and I just spent three hours making sure I have contingencies for "they fuck it up in expected ways" and "they fuck it up in unexpected ways".

Unwinnable subscribers saw an excerpt of this last month, but here's the much, much longer convo I had with Autumn back in December about cultural criticism, my process, and a long, ongoing battle with alienation from my own taste and craft. A little rambly, apologies

I finished Ancillary Justice and really liked it. It’s more action/space opera-y than I typically like but has such a unique and excellent protagonist. This is the third Ann Leckie book I’ve read and I didn’t like the first two, but glad I gave just one more try.

My favourite game subreddits are factory/automation players. They are either “I’ve maxed out my VU so my UPS is now 500k/min here’s a 41,089 building blueprint you can paste 12 times but use these 7 optimization mods so your CPU doesn’t catch fire” and “i made a disco ball with conveyor belts”

After killing scores of plants during the pandemic, last spring I trued again with just a single basil plant. Instead if trying to keep her alive I neglect her until I think it’s going to die and then drown it. Here’s yesterday/ today. She’s so dramatic. Lost like two leaves.

Sometimes I worry that I have lost my love of reading or that my attention span is broken from social media and electronic devices, and then I finally pick up a book and read it start to finish in under 24 hours and remember that I don’t read because I have stuff I need to get done.

I decided to draw strawberries with my new coloured pencils and halfway through looked up a video tutorial on coloured pencils because I remembered there was some technique for smoothing (it’s solvents brushed on top) and part way through the 30m video turns out the example project was strawberries

This year's Polaris game design papers are up and our group worked on Mechanical Comedy in Games, as in games where the comedy comes from players performing the jokes. Really pleased with what we learned (and glad I thought to pitch the topic).

Running out of horror films, I could use some recommendations. What’s an obscure horror film you absolutely loved? (I mean “obscure for horror fans” not just “obscure for film watchers”, bonus for female directors/casts and body horror but I watch any genre)

Making a stupid owl and bothered by the fact that it is not anatomically correct and trying to decide between following the kit (two cartoon wings and a little tail) and being accurate (needle felting each part of the wing as it folds and running out of felt). Anyway great activity A+ entertainment

(you can’t make me think about the new year) also today I finished a felting kit my aunt gifted me. I love embroidery and have been interested in some more textile art so this was fun/cute to learn from. I can see a bunch of ways of combining it with other techniques, like stumpwork and beading.
