Back from the ice! ❄️✨ Our group member @alexandrazuhr.bsky.social has safely returned from Antarctica after an intense field campaign. She drilled several firn cores that will be key to dating and interpreting airborne radar data collected with Polar6. Excited for the science to come!

Check out this time-lapse video of waves eroding an ice front from an experiment conducted in our cryogenic wave tank at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The tank is housed in a walk-in freezer, and the waves are precisely controlled. This video captures about an hour of wave erosion.

Have I been to Antarctica? No. But my colleagues have, and we can learn a lot from the data they collected! Really happy to share that our work is now published!

Interdisciplinary collaborations can lead to really cool science. This study led by @gmoss13.bsky.social is a great example. Here, we show how simulation-based inference helps to infer more information from radar stratigraphy than possible before: Both, surface accumulation and basal melt rates.

We obtain posterior distributions over ice accumulation and melting rates for Ekström Ice Shelf over the past hundreds of years. This allows us to make quantitative statements about the history of the atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
