I'm just going to completely ignore Tokens in my library. I think they are very poorly designed. When the lexicon spec goes to the IETF, Tokens need to be fixed or removed entirely. I'm leaning towards removing since they don't seem to have any value over raw strings in knownValues.

Tokens in the lexicon spec feel pretty bolted on tbh. Why are they used in the string type and not their own type? How are you supposed to know if a known value is a token NSID or just a string? If I have "com.my.token" and "www.example.com", how do I tell one is a token and the other is a string?

Python not having an easy way to get the first element from a list as an optional is very unfortunate. Doing next(iter(v)) and catching StopIteration is pretty annoying. I think I've been spoiled by Rust having first() and last() methods on array types.

Still playing around with typing for lexicon defs. Dug into how atcute does it and threw together a rough typed example of it in Python. Not sure I like it. It's nice that it's all a dict w/ helper functions, but a full @dataclass_transform setup like I have allows for direct parsing into an object

I just ran into the most disgusting slop codebase at work last week. It was written ~5 years ago, with no LLMs I don’t think LLMs are going to fix bad code, but they will at least raise the bar as LLMs do put more thought into design than some of my coworkers do.

Endfield is good, so far. I’m biased as l played AK for years and enjoy the world. The gameplay is kinda what I wanted from ZZZ overall. I can at least recommend trying it. It’s a gacha like any other though so 🤷‍♂️

Just learned about phantom-types in Python. Neat idea that I might steal for my lexicon stuff. Basically, shove validation logic into __isinstance__ then use isinstance() for both runtime validation and static typing. A more robust version of NewType.

This is a neat little repo for showing how an ML feed algo might work, but it’s basically useless for “open sourcing” their actual feed. Seems more like performative open source than anything else. I don’t see much use in it beyond the parameters they use for recommendation.

Encoding the lexicon spec into a type system is oddly fun? I get to find weird ways to stuff metadata into classes and fields. There's also definitely an impedance mismatch between the systems, so some creativity is required.

Typing in Python is both frustrating and satisfying. It's like having a puzzle where you're missing a few pieces and a tiny amount are too big or small, so nothing fits together perfectly. You can make it work and it's great when it does, but it's very annoying when you need the missing pieces.

I really wish Python had a modern HTTP client in it's standard library and not this half-baked urllib.request client that has been limping along since Python 2.
