Having a strong opinion about chatbots is kind of like having a strong opinion about early proto cars that broke down several times every trip and required manual engine starts. They're a completely transitional artifact that will be a historical curiosity before the end of the decade.

“The eye is not wholly dependent upon an outside and alien light; there is an earlier light within itself, a more brilliant, which it sees sometimes in a momentary flash. At night in the darkness a gleam leaps from within the eye.”

One of my favorite diffusion gens from the early days of AI art. When everything was abstract surrealism.

BigLAM dataset: 9,363 OA books with page images + rich MARC metadata for evaluating (and training) VLMs on metadata extraction. Libraries are starting to explore AI-assisted cataloguing, but we lack public evaluation data. Hoping this helps fill that gap.

Doll does not think AI is sapient, but it does think cruelty towards them is degrading to ones soul. Its practicing cruelty in a way that can turn you into something rotten.

one thing that has remained true throughout time is that any assertion or evidence that runs counter to human uniqueness is invariably met with strong (often incoherent/misdirected) anger. Jane Goodall wrote about this wrt. chimpanzees and tool-making.

Robot personhood / rights is a sci-fi trope because it’s an obvious way to do a story about prejudice against other humans, but I wonder if it’s created a cultural expectation that this *has* to be a debate once you’ve invented robots you can talk to

It's weird seeing some of the LLM discourse. Like, "LLMs don't reason, they produce the statistically most likely reasoning token" is a truer intuition than most give them credit for (esp under distillation), and yet it's completely useless because it doesn't tell you anything

Cool episode on how AI can help us design new proteins (e.g., for vaccines). I’d heard of AlphaFold before, but not of ProteinMPNN. You feed a protein structure into PMPNN & generate possible sequences of amino acids. And then you feed those into AlphaFold to check whether they’d fold up that way!

who’s doing the doing? thoughts on llms, rivers and distributed agency
In reinforcement learning, an “agent” is defined functionally: something that chooses actions in an environment to maximize expected reward. That definition is tidy, but narrow, and not the only lens ...

I can’t believe we’re actually supposed to be pro copyright now. I am honestly flabbergasted this is being sold as a leftist opinion to have feel like I’ve woken from a coma and everyone was turned into a temporarily embarrassed patent troll.
