And we still show up (and are expected to) and perform at the highest levels. I refer to it as the 50 pound backpack we’re born wearing and that we add another few bricks to each year of our lives. While everyone else’s backpacks are full of feathers.

Honestly I don’t think there’s ever been a point where I was aware of my Blackness and wasn’t grieving one thing or another. As a kid I grew up grieving our slain heroes after we learned about them in class. As I got older, I lost friends & mentors to the environment and time.

There’s someone somewhere who is hyper aware of what’s going on in the world. There’s also someone somewhere who has no idea what’s going on in the world. I want to be somewhere in the middle.

Black women, when you’re afraid what do you do? Who do you tell? Where is your refuge?
