Let's build a world of free software. Forever. Sometimes, open source software just feels right. Be that because it prioritises user experience and community over profit margins, or it puts first the rights of the user to be free in their use, no one can stop you with open source.

As an emdash enjoyer, I think I'm coming to loathe that this has now become so associated with the rise of AI-generated slop.

Greenspun's Tenth Rule, but for microservices. Any sufficiently complicated service orchestration system contains an ad-hoc, informally-specified, bug-ridden, slow implementation of half of Erlang/OTP.

Not only does trying to out farage farage not work, it lays stepping stones for him, by normalising his hateful ideology, starting the process of making it politically respectable and further legitimising it in the mind of the public.

[Trauma, homophobia, animal cruelty] I've been teary off and on. He just wanted to be a newlywed and they killed his dog and burned his house, and took his life and ruined his husband's life and I can't. The cruelty of this world. I can't.

yesterday, we were busy celebrating May 17th!!! on the 17th of May 1990, the world health organisation removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. let this remind us of what we're capable of when we stand together.

exactly lol i mean, the Nazis called themselves 'national socialists' and, as we all know, that turned out to be a VERY different thing to the kind of socialism we tend to imagine and usually mean when we use the word 'socialism' lol

we live in a world where we must relentlessly fight for our human rights. don't let go. never give up. we cannot afford to let them win; we will go backwards if they get what they want, and that's probably the cheapest labour possible, regardless of our human rights.

shocker: myself and many of my autistic peers are living exciting, vibrant lives, and, perhaps most astonishingly of all, many of us have mastered the arcane art of using a toilet autism is a divergence. it's not some immobilising, bladder-puncturing disease or illness it's not for ya'll to treat.

here it is. THIS. what if we put our souls back into our designs? there were perhaps once little intricacies in designs that really helped things just feel nice. have these intricacies gone away? in a chase for mass appeal or trendy 'cleanliness', have we lost a lot of that character in designs?

we donβt need βFrutiger Aeroβ or βAquaβ or βSkeuomorphismβ back or whatever the aesthetic was never the problem what we need is designs that have actual love and care put into them

sorry XDA but this just isn't true lol if i encrypt my boot drive, i'm no less vulnerable to ransomware at an OS / application level you absolutely CAN 'double-encrypt' something; that's called having multiple layers of encryption you don't even need the key of the first layer to encrypt further

information is power!!! it's great to see places on the web part ways with some paywalling while spreading and shedding light on largely already public info. definitely a step in the right direction imo, and just generally a win for all of us in my eyes

Nightshade: Protecting Copyright
Since their arrival, generative AI models and their trainers have demonstrated their ability to download any online content for model training. For content owners and creators, few tools can prevent their content from being fed into a generative AI model against their will. Opt-out lists have been disregarded by model trainers in the past, and can be easily ignored with zero consequences. They are unverifiable and unenforceable, and those who violate opt-out lists and do-not-scrape directives can not be identified with high confidence.

this, right here, is largely why ai needs regulating. what if every single ai-generated image had to have a fat watermark towards the middle which was outlined and mandated by legislation to explain that the image was generated by ai? would we not immediately solve a fair few impersonation issues?
