I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Apple shouldn’t need to *trick* people into installing Tahoe, and yet its Settings > General > Software Update UI seems intent on doing just that.

Apropos of a product announcement I just saw go by: folks, using Tauri and web views does not make you more of a “Native App” compared to something using Electron. That is not what “native” means in the context of apps. Long-time Mac-aficionados over here just dying of this lack of comprehension. 😭

Quite surprised to hear that Native Instruments is insolvent. The private equity acquisition doesn’t seem to have gone well. The centralization (acquiring iZotope, etc.) was bad, too. I’d really love to see us get out of this cycle! But it’s obviously going to be a messy few years ahead /w LLMs etc.

A word to myself: keep resisting ICE while also staying open to mercy towards the human beings behind the masks. Their dehumanizing efforts do not justify my own dehumanization of them in return.

Google Calendar pro tip (read: workaround 🤪): if you have a project calendar or similar—something that isn’t your own individual calendar—and you want to make sure you’re “busy” for events on it, you just (“just”) have to invite yourself to those events. 🥴

Open-source maintainer responsibility: *Always* read the changelog (and preferably the detailed changes!) for the dependency bumps you are merging from Dependabot/Renovate/etc. I just found one small “whoops, that’ll be no good for other users of this” that way; you might also spot much worse.

Well, Apple has gotten to the point where it’s sending notifications to try to get people to upgrade to Tahoe. Not going to happen, not sorry about it. Maybe macOS 27 will be enough of an improvement to consider it, but right now I’m happy with «checks notes» a legible user interface.

Confession: I’m the kind of… strange person… that will meticulously go point by point in plotaroute.com (by far the best such tool out there!) to make an actually accurate course map for races that hits every tangent perfectly and whatnot so the course distance matches the official race distance. 😆

Was just reading a piece that used the word “misled” and remembered with much amusement—as I always do on encountering the word—how for a very long time I read it as the last tense of a word I otherwise never encountered, “misle”, pronounced like “idle” with appropriate alterations.

Here’s another app no-no: don’t make checkboxes (or radio buttons or, well, anything but buttons!) act like buttons and freeze the UI or make it *appear* interactive but such that clicking does nothing or indeed can end up queueing events that now land in the wrong spot. Looking at you, Jira. 😒

Here’s one of my top rules for applications—native, web, you name it—: Do. not. intercept. normal OS-level application shortcuts. Don’t do it! Today’s example: a web app that has overridden ⌘[ to toggle the navigation sidebar. Folks, no: that is for “navigate back”! Hijacking it is terrible!

Incident.io’s LLM integration is one of the nicer uses of LLMs I’ve used. Most of these kinds of features are just annoying nonsense, but this makes managing an incident a *lot* easier, because “conversational” is easier than “memorize a CLI you use rarely”.

“In-Context Learning” is a hilariously bad name for “include examples or correct and incorrect usage”. It’s not learning. It’s steering! Many of the metaphors most commonly used of ML systems are annoyingly misleading—arguably including the ‘L’ in ML!—but the problem has gotten much worse lately.

Giving codeberg.org/ a serious whirl for a project I’m working on. Deeply unhappy with the trajectory at GitHub—most of all, that it cannot seem to make its core product better and in fact is seeing it steadily degrade because it’s so distracted by chasing LLM stuff! (Not a comment on LLMs.)
