Finally got around to reading Build Systems à la Carte (dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...), it's really great (like everyone says). I love papers like this, that take a well-known, messy, unloved area and propose a useful organizing principle for it.

I don’t think it has to be that way. But good interfaces that respect their human users are hard in the best of scenarios, and much harder when we don’t fully understand the underlying technology.

…and sometimes due to almost incidental UI decisions. For instance, we worry about people making “friends” with LLMs…but the chat interface we give them is mimicking the same chat interface they talk to humans with. I get utility out of LLMs! But we have given them such misleading interfaces.

Yeah! I think this is my biggest frustrations with LLMs as we have them (after setting aside the hype-train): the language and interfaces we use to present these tools to people are actively misleading. Sometimes due to language (as previously discussed or as in, for instance, ChatGPT’s UI)…

1. I really like a lot of Messiaen’s work. 2. It is *not* “working music”. I think that’s largely a compliment! It demands attention and engagement. It refuses to be background material. There’s something interesting there about “working music” in general.

Started the conclusion of Mvt. III in the #symphony this morning. I’ve been building my way toward it for the past couple of weeks (in my little 20–30-minute stretches) and today: boom, there’s the tonic we’ve been dancing toward and then backing away from for a couple minutes worth of #music. 🎼

Mucking a bit with Monarch Money after years of using YNAB and zero-based budgeting. Conclusion so far: if Monarch ever goes after zero-based budgeting, YNAB is going to be in for a rocky time. But right now, both of them overlap about 80% with what I want… so neither of them is 100% what I want. 😮‍💨

A thing I've been doing recently is "on-call consulting". When a Swift Concurrency thing comes up, I'm just there to help. Diving deep, design ideas, quick fix, whatever. It's lightweight, cost effective, and feels so productive/educational. Maybe your team could be into this too?
