A small update on web fonts: from today, we’re no longer including the .woff format by default, since browser support for .woff2 is virtually identical (96% vs 96.7%). We’ll continue to provide them on request for any users who need them.

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? Fonts regularly take multiple years to make, and developing a small typeface family can easily cost $50k.

The type distributor (and organiser of my favourite typography conference), @fontstand.com, is restructuring into a cooperative. It’s hard to overstate how valuable this could be, for foundries, customers, and the health of the whole industry. A font platform owned by independent foundries!

Maybe you’ve heard: every font is free! Since fonts aren’t subject to copyright, you can legally ‘pirate’ them if you use a specific loophole! ...except that’s not really true. I’ve seen this claim repeated quite a lot recently, and it’s missing some pretty important nuance. 🧵 A thread:

I’m not quite ready to lock in a release date, but I’ve been making progress on v0.2 of MD Thermochrome. The main focus is this (duplexed) inkbleed/dot size axis, which opens up a huge range of options for layering text.

20/02/20–20/02/25 MD launched five years ago today. Since then we’ve released 99 fonts across 7 families, and designed over 81,000 (!) individual glyphs. Here’s to five more years.

Next week will be 5 years since I launched Mass-Driver — I’m beyond grateful to have been able to spend the past half decade (!!) doing what I love. That said, I’m going to celebrate with a much-needed week off. Please try to avoid having font-related emergencies until I’m back on the 24th.

I’m always hesitant to post things which feel too much like ads, but since the #gamedev community here is so strong I want to quietly mention that our font licensing was actively designed with game developers in mind. Buy once, use forever, no media restrictions or renewal fees.

I realised this week (the one nice thing to have come out of doing my taxes) that I’ve sold a font on every continent except Antarctica. So uh, if anyone currently based in Antarctica is reading this, I’ll get you a 99% discount code if you can help me hit an unnecessary milestone

Other than becoming completely invisible to It’s Nice That/Slanted/etc., is there actually any downside to deleting Instagram as a designer? I was already struggling to justify having an account — recent news is making me seriously consider dropping it entirely

If you’re starting a new project this week and reaching for the Lorem Ipsum text, make sure you also testing with real-world copy. Latin always looks great, it’s all n’s and o’s and beautiful rhythm — real text is messy, full of k’s and 5’s and punctuation. Design for the mess!
