Pretty insane coincidence, I tied my all time recorded wind gust to the tenth of a mph yesterday (66.2 mph). Both of these happened this year (partially because I have been making an effort to actually use my anemometer more and partially dumb luck).

Looks like the system affecting the northeast tomorrow will have a pretty intense low level jet. The 18z HRRR depicts 925mb winds of 85-90kt in the jet core. The big question is: how much of this wind will actually affect the surface…

Possible brief spout-funnel beneath a shallow updraft yesterday afternoon. Was a bit too far to tell whether this was real or just scuddy nothingness.

A little over an hour of 1-min wind speed data from last night's cold front passage from Stony Brook beach. These data have little use, since they are collected on a car mounted anemometer (z~2m). That said, it is neat to compare with the NYSM Stony Brook site less than a mile to the east.

Intriguing synoptic similarities between tmr (11/5/25) and the 10/7/20 low-topped derecho. Thankfully, timing appears to be on our side with the cold front entering WNY in the evening. Missing diurnal Tmax (and a slightly drier prefrontal airmass) should result in a weaker, instability-starved line

That’s…not at all how this works. As the NHC’s wind field image shows, Jamaica is only experiencing tropical storm-force winds right now, with weaker winds elsewhere. The most widespread and longest-lasting impact has and will be extreme rain - for which the prep is rather different than wind.

Pretty wild conditions on the LI north shore this morning associated with #HurricaneErin

Quick storm chase in the rolling farmland of western Washington County. A CG barrage was the main show with this storm, but the structure was decent at times. Eventually the complex sorta stalled out and produced some minor flash flooding in South Glens Falls.

There is noticeable departure in solar insolation today on the NYS Mesonet due to wildfire smoke aloft. At the Schuylerville site, today's peak solar insolation (761) was about 100 Wm^-2 less than yesterday's (854).

While the marine layer is my mortal enemy, I do enjoy watching outflow boundaries move through it. Laminar flow has its moments.

Neat visible satellite imagery of morning convection in the Ohio River Valley this morning. Evaporative cooling and anvil shading behind a storm offset surface heating. This is especially evident when late morning cumulus erupt everywhere except this spot.

I mean if it’s gonna happen, it’ll probably be from developing updrafts on this boundary

Have a feeling somebody on the NJ coast is gonna get a nice waterspout tomorrow morning.
