Many terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems have lost their uniqueness as competitive generalists (think grass, pigeons, etc.) replace endemic species. But that doesn't appear to be the case for all ocean fish. Huge thanks to a powerhouse co-author team for getting this across the finish line!

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

NOAA has required us to discuss climate change impacts of our work in grant applications for years. This is *all habitat restoration grants*. The climate impacts of this are pretty clear. The infrastructure impacts of this will be far reaching too.

NOAA is on the chopping block, and that’s infuriating. The scientists at NOAA make us safer and stronger. They forecast weather, track wildfires, provide tsunami warning, respond to climate change, and more, and they are especially important for coastal communities.

Should be interesting (and probably disappointing) to see our upcoming water chemistry sampling results, plus see the lingering effects of runoff on the water column and ocean floor over the next year. We saw it after the Woolsey Fire, I can imagine the result is any better this time around.

New: The LA wildfires blew untold tons of toxic ash over the ocean. As the fires broke out, scientists were at the "right place at a horrible time" - on an expedition off the LA coast, giving them a rare chance to gather real-time data on marine impacts. To update people on the NSF PRFB situation: despite the court challenge and rescinding the original memo, the NSF has continued to comply with the executive order. They have not communicated with us at all and our paychecks are still canceled indefinitely. I know people who cannot pay their rent.
