I would go so far as to say the plot is a little bit cyclical, which is why we often see the characters returning to the same topics, over and over again… each time getting more of their perspective. And that Hagio Moto was likely inspired by gothic literature (I guess that’s obvious?).

I think the fact that the plot isn’t linear is why the characters seem to regress at different parts of the story. How many times did Ian change his mind about Jeremy’s confession? I find that style of writing to be realistic, when other people might find it annoying.
