Fantastic starting keynote by @cvscheve.bsky.social at #ISRE2026! Emotions are essential to political conflict. They are part of what we are negotiating when we enter conflict, it's not just reasons and ideas but how we (should) feel about things.

Presenting today at #ISRE2026 in Brisbane, Australia! I'm talking about linguistic evidence and whether it is relevant to the question whether basic emotions exist. Spoiler: it isn't, but it is relevant to whether evidence was gathered adequately.

To me, this is the central paradox of LLM use: you need to be a subject expert in order to judge whether what it produces is any good. But if you’re already a subject expert, you have no need for the LLM, since you already know, or are capable of figuring out, the correct output.
