Favorite books I read in 2025: *Favorite across all genres and categories was Emily Tesh's The Incandescent. I loved how much it is about teaching and all the details of that work coming through. A lot of the thinking about selfhood, home, purposes, and choices was very much my thing!

A list of memorable sporting events I went to in 2025: 1. All three meets of the Sprouts Collegiate Quad in college women's gymnastics (my first time at a WAG meet at any level!) 2. OU men's gymnastics vs Air Force (my first time at a MAG meet at any level!)

But it is annoying that standard terms of use must be so dense/comprehensive that casual users can be freaked out by the language. It's actually good that you give a license so they can provide the service!

One Adv Stats student did an atmospheric science project, and I'm so excited to teach Math of Climate in the spring 😍 Still grading and committee work ahead, but truly the best last day of the semester with students.

It won't happen, but I'd love to see for-profit companies speak out about the myriad ways they've benefited from NCAR's shared tools and datasets and instruments and overall knowledge. The sheer amount of economic value alone provided by this one-of-a-kind institution since 1960 is hard to fathom.

NCAR is a unique & valuable asset - far more than a climate model, or observations, or technology, or training ground, or gathering space. It covers weather, space weather, data, climate, paleo-climate, and everything in-between. It's building is an icon, but it's iconic status goes far beyond that.

So the word from UCAR (NCAR’s managing entity) is, essentially, “This is news to us!” news.ucar.edu/133054/ucar-... 🤔

I'm not sure most folks are aware of the immense magnitude of loss this would entail for the global weather and climate community, and beyond. NCAR has played a greater cumulative role in advancing weather prediction and atmospheric modeling than perhaps any other single entity in the world.

Other folks are doing a better job describing the community contributions of NCAR. But personally, the tutorials, resources, models, and collaborations that I had through NCAR were vital to my learning & doing atmospheric science and getting a PhD.

These people are nuts. NCAR developed the GPS dropsonde, which revolutionized the understanding of TC structure, improved forecasts, and validated remote sensing platforms, as documented in over 400 peer-reviewed publications in the last 25 years. And that’s just one of NCAR’s countless advances.

NCAR does a whole lot more than just climate research, and I think calling it a climate research lab paints an incomplete picture. Atmospheric chemistry, severe thunderstorms, radar, software and tools, etc.

NCAR is crucial to cutting-edge meteorology and improvements in weather forecasting. As others have noted, it's far, far bigger than a "climate" research lab. This is self-sabotage by a wildly ignorant and malicious administration cutting off their nose to spite their face. Find a better scapegoat.
