#MathsToday Math of Climate: cobweb diagrams! Comparing the maps 3x_n - x_n^3 vs 0.5*(3x_n - x_n^3)! Chaos enters the picture and things go in all the directions (but in only one dimension). A student noticed topological transitivity totally unprompted, which was my favorite part.

#MathsToday Lots of folks out sick, unfortunately, in both classes today. But a good discussion (led by one of our instruction librarians) of evaluating datasets in Principles of Data Analysis! And looking at some patterns to start writing hypotheses in Applied Stats.

#MathsToday Zipped through descriptive stats for numerical data in Stat Analysis today. I have some groups that move at really different paces in that class, and the card sort from Sandi Takis and Kathy Fritz with histograms, boxplots, and summary stats is such a good one for evening that out!

#MathsToday I included more practice with intervals in Applied Stats, but additional scaffolding for that would have helped a lot. Great discussions in PoDA about evaluating some simple analysis examples using the principles! (McGowan et al 2022)

A belated #MathsToday from yesterday: had planned to do a simple thermohaline circulation model in Math of Climate, but hw discussion about bifurcation and hysteresis was really needed (and I think helpful). Excited to get into 1d discrete maps and chaos!

Well, at least we got one exciting Homan vs Tirinzoni game.

The NCAR supercomputer facility transfer was announced a month before the NSF deadline to reply to a Dear Colleague Letter concerning, among other things, potential transfer of the same facility. The DCL is no more than a vacuous, performative gesture to make us feel like we have a say. #SaveNCAR

am currently very sad about the curling (even though it's just a RR game and there is plenty of time). Grading will definitely help, right?

It's thanks to the NCAR supercomputer that I was able to finish my PhD dissertation - without it the task would've been much harder and taken much longer. I'm sure many others in the atmospheric science community are in the same boat.

#MathsToday Started Stat Analysis today with a carousel of different graphs from the same data. It was a little chaotic (mostly because the number of students there today was really not in my favor), but it led to good conversations about making clear graphs with more folks contributing than usual!

#MathsToday: Had some folks missing in Principles of Data Analysis and decided to expand one activity and push back another one based on the group I had. Some good conversations about balancing succinctness, clarity, and thoroughness of analysis. (Though I need to work a little on balancing voices.)

#MathsToday Still really working on figuring out the dynamics of this group of Stat Analysis students. But some good conversations about data wrangling and evidence in experiments today.

#MathsToday The problems of the week I post in the dept vary a lot in how much attention they get, but this week's *really* caught a couple students. Diffy boxes/ Ducci sequences are great.

#MathsToday Started doing some data visualization with ggplot and exploring data dictionaries in PoDA. Could have used more structure on both of those, I think. Pretty smooth intro to histogram descriptions in Applied Stats! Starting with something polygraph/guess who style is always solid there.

#MathsToday Stat Analysis students settled into R pretty well today! For Applied Stats, intro to histograms went well, but it seems like population parameter vs sample statistics will take a bit to solidify.

#MathsToday got collectively stuck in Math of Climate (in a way that I realized afterwards was all of us failing at units, whoops), but did have a good if brief discussion of stability of equilibrium points! It's going to be fun to see what students figure out about the various 1D maps in their hw.

#MathsToday I didn't give Principles of Data Analysis students nearly enough time to talk through the different data representations they had looked at since last week (quilts, visceralization, scrollytelling). Not sure I prompted discussion particularly well, but they were all so insightful anyway!

What sits with me after this week of #AMS2026 is that despite everything we’ve seen over the last 12 months, the science is resilient. It is hurt and handicapped and hamstrung but it endures. And the students, despite EVERYTHING **still** want to work for NWS or in broadcasting.

#MathsToday: First day of Mathematics of Climate! Today was pretty structured and more on the climate side (basic energy balance models), but next week we'll start playing with dynamical systems and equilibria and stability.

#MathsToday: Software installation day dragged energy in PoDA down a bit, but there was some really good thinking and discussion about matching data and research questions afterwards. Applied Stats started with a fire alarm, but teamwork went well, and their thinking about graphs was great!
