9/ Understanding these concepts helps explain the history of contrast agents. Here are examples of elements used before iodine became primary. ➤Gold (atomic number 79) ➤Mercury (80) ➤Lead (82) ➤Bismuth (83) ➤Thorium (90) What do all of these elements have in common? They are relatively heavy.

7/ Fat, muscle, and other soft tissues are primarily comprised of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen. These smaller elements absorb few X-rays. When injected into a blood vessel, iodine will absorb more X-rays, appear more opaque, and provide "contrast" with surrounding soft tissues.
