I will check this reference out! My understanding is that you can always push functions a bit further till the point you have a description of the substrate. Then either it collapse in identity theory or become a substrate relevant framework, such as the one proposed by @anilseth.bsky.social.

This is a core issue that I have with the recent paper on AI and consciousness based on computational functionalist theories. Also the term theory is very inflated nowadays. I am guilty of that myself, but something to think about.

Very good point! We started from similar premises in our 2021 paper academic.oup.com/nc/article/2... And a similar claim was made more recently by Trachtenberg and colleagues journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.... Philosophy of psychiatry and neuroscience of consciousness have a lot in common!

I completely second this. My impression is that we all have crazy stories about this issue. And I think the broader issue is that there’s no respect for people’s quality of life. Not to mention if you diverge a little from the norm and have chronic conditions and traveling is painful by default.
