People often talk about how badly migrants are treated, and how misleading the media is. And it is. But this focus can overlook difficult moral dilemmas, where it's not clear - even if you have all the facts - what policy is ethically defensible. That's the focus of this special issue.

NGOs are often unsure how to help refugees. For example, when refugees without rights seek help repatriating, NGOs may feel helping makes them complicit in forced returns, but not helping forces refugees to remain. As a Turkish migrant in Germany, I've followed this whole debate with much fear & anger. I'm relieved that the bill hasn't passed but seeing how easily certain "principles" are given up & certain statements are uttered by supposedly "centrist" politicians makes me scared to the bone.

Friedrich Merz, the leader of the German CDU, just claimed in parliament that gang rapes are committed on a daily basis by asylum seekers in Germany. It is pure far right propaganda. The mainstreaming of the far right is happening on steroids in Germany right now.

The book's main argument: There are good reasons to think states have principally legitimate authority to exclude immigrants. But: These reasons rest on moral values reliably undermined by core features of many real-existing exclusion regimes, especially in the Global North.
