Every legitimate scholar must read their sources & their sources' sources. I have found many of my sources falsely citing, falsely quoting, poorly summarizing - changing the meaning of a source, sometimes deliberately to suit their argument. Anything less is malpractice. Ai is always malpractice.

Sounds like a fun but thoughtful read for my business history colleagues.

It's about society's coddling of lazy + wrong men. Men in America don't get punished enough for stealing ideas, leading us into war, killing women and children, or being wrong, in general. Even before AI, men have been operating within a system of relative impunity and lack of consequence.

Seems like a huge percentage of law briefs, articles and conference papers caught with fake citations are written by men. When will we see them fired, lose rank/tenure, or banned from journals? They’re not even getting named and shamed YET.

As a historian, this baffles me. Citation is crucial to the scientific nethod. BUT are authors in these other fields under pressure to have a certain number of citations? Is this where the problem lies?

As a historian I am dumbfounded as to what is going on in these fields. My manuscript has 3,300 citations, inclusive of repetitions. I have read every single one of the works I cite, at least the relevant portion. The publisher will make me cut some. Citation is crucial to the scientific method.

First, they are NOT hallucinations. Machines and algorithms cannot hallucinate. They are faulty predictions degenerating information into falsehoods or false synthetic texts. (Doherty, forthcoming)

Citations are not fillers or afterthoughts. The one with the most citations or longest bibliography doesn't WIN. Any academic squeezing them in at the end is behaving like a 15-year old student writing their first paper. Read it and cite it if you used it. Period.

Anthropomorphic marketing language is truly fooling people into misunderstanding and overestimating the technology. We need remedial work to educate the public on the reality, limits, and dangers of relying on this inherently flawed technology as if it is intelligent or conscious.

By refusing to disclose that the books are ai generated synthetic texts, this publisher is proving the critics right that everything about generative ai is fraudulent and unethical.

Getting kind of tired of self-styled serious people confidently asserting that data centre water use is a made up issue.

Informed faculty need to speak up and out and educate colleagues and administrators on what is at stake when decisions are being made based on marketing ploys and not on science, studies, and the concerns they raise. Read this thread for a thoughtful reponse:

Read the abstract written by the author OR the intro and conclusion of the actual article or book, NOT a computer generated summary contaminated by falsehoods or imprecise wording and synonyms. Anything less is faulty methodology and intellectual laziness and dishonesty.
