Was happy to be greeted by inky caps this am. This mushroom excretes enzymes to digest itself to spread more spores. When the dark spores mix with the digestive fluids, it gives the mushroom an inky appearance. So goth, I love it.

Im so bummed to see this. Cipres had been an incredible computational resource to my research program. As an ECR I depended on it to run so many phylogenetic analyses, many if which ended up in my publications. I’m really sad to see it go. Much gratitude for the people who kept Cipres running

Mongolian oak (Q. mongolica) buries its embryo deeply betw the cotyledons. Good move! Squirrels nip off the tips of the acorns to keep them from germinating in the cache. Of 6 taxa studied, only Q. mongolica germination was unaffected by artificial clipping. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

When my collaborator, Selena Smith, and I process these Cretaceous fruits we are able to observe and collect amazing details of tissues and cells. All of which are important for identifying and analyzing the relationships of these Antarctic fossils

Tree ferns are nice and all, but our main objective was to recover 3D preserved Cretaceous flowering plants. Long story short: mission accomplished. We found a shocking diversity of flowers and fruits that chronicle which groups were diversifying in the Southern Hemisphere during the Cretaceous

Cool autumn temperatures in North America rn have me reminiscing about an Antarctic expedition I led earlier this year to collect Cretaceous plants. (Thx to NSF for funding). Will post more pics soon
