Not a voice actor myself, but the art itself is important to not just video games, but also animation, audiobooks, among a whole lot of other stuff.

While we are on the topic of "idea guys," have we not already proved that games auteurism prevents us from getting fresh stories and experiences from talented developers of all levels (!!!) and marginalized groups? The "auteurs" will not save us from the well running dry. It will be EVERYONE ELSE.

On the other hand, I cannot do my job effectively if a writer isn't there to explain their reasoning for the lines and where it came from to a director, who then translates that into vocal technique to the actor. This is a very collaborative process that requires human interaction and intention.

Some of the most well received missions I wrote for Borderlands 4 were largely due to the voice acting. Yes, the script was good, but the voice acting could have taken that script and made it a boring/forgettable mission or one you'll remember for years to come. And that happened in the booth.

AI can't do that. It can't understand the words or the characters it's "voicing." It can't understand your intent and has no intent of its own. You need a real actor to do this.

If your game has voice acting, then working with the voice actors is half of your writing process. It's not complete until you've heard it interpreted and reimagined by a voice actor. And they always reimagine it in ways that elevate the writing, in ways you never would have imagined yourself.

The thing that strikes me about replacing voice actors with AI slop is that, in the scope of a big AA/AAA production it barely saves money? These people aren't even full time. It's immizerating people because immizerating people is your goal, nothing more.

Thank you to everyone today who’s said how important voice acting is to games. It really helps fight against the idea we’re disposable or replaceable. I know we’re not curing cancer here, but human creativity is one of the things that make life worthwhile- VA in games is part of that enjoyment.
