I’m staying in a film-themed hotel in Łódź with original Polish poster art on every wall and a Wajda mural painted on the building opposite. It’s the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in and the room even comes with a massive telly… but motion smoothing is switched on so there goes the TripAdvisor review.

I watched Red Planet on the new 4K UHD from @arrowvideo.bsky.social last night and either it’s actually quite good or I just have a soft spot for films released when I was 10-12 years old, but either way I had a very good time.

Just announced by Eureka, Into the Forest: Folktales at DEFA, featuring five East German Märchenfilme alongside new commentaries, video extras, three animated shorts from the DEFA archives and a stacked book of essays. This has been a dream production project. Pick it up.

The second annual Culture Shock festival (from the folks at @celluloidscreams.bsky.social) kicks off at Sheffield's Showroom Cinema in just two weeks. You won't find more eclectic genre programming – Possession, A Chinese Ghost Story, Dead Mountaineer's Hotel, R.O.T.O.R. – anywhere else.

I've just realised it's been 10 years now since I made my first contribution to a Blu-ray release. I wrote an essay on Wolfgang Petersen's Enemy Mine (still a firm favourite) for Eureka in 2016. A decade later, I'm producing discs for them – all thanks to this underrated little sci-fi film, I guess.

Picked up the BFI’s new release of Strongroom and absolutely loved supporting feature The Man in the Back Seat. Incredibly nippy at 57 minutes(!), it’s a very tense crime thriller that follows two petty crooks desperately trying to offload their injured victim without getting caught. Great stuff.

Eureka's May titles have just been announced, all of them a total blast to work on: Buster Keaton's masterpiece The General on 4K UHD, an excellent and underseen outing for Inspector Maigret in Maurice Tourneur's Cécile is Dead and Frank Beyer's controversial Trace of Stones, one of DEFA's finest.

It has made my day to see Eureka's release of Jakob the Liar – the only East German film to ever be nominated for an Academy Award – top the @avforums.bsky.social list of Top 10 Blu-rays for February 2026. It was a genuine honour to produce this one and I'm really very proud of it.

Of all the new-to-me films I watched last year, the one I think about most often is Piotr Szulkin's War of the Worlds: Next Century. A radical approach to the familiar alien invasion narrative about the evils of media manipulation (and martians obviously). Available on disc from Radiance.

Ho ho ho and Merry Christmas! With so many classic films screening on UK television over the Christmas period, I thought I'd start a thread of what to look out for over the coming days...

Just done the ritualistic flick through the seasonal Radio Times and pleased to see that 1) the BBC has remembered films made before 1980 and 2) New Year’s Eve on BBC Four is wall-to-wall Jaws programming. What better way to welcome 2026 than watching Jaws 2.

Great to see a Eureka release make it onto the Sight and Sound Discs of the Year (in the current issue of the print magazine) for the second year running. A very fun one to work on, co-produced by myself and Jacob Milligan.

Went to see Relay yesterday, which is both one of the best films I've seen at the cinema all year and one of the most surprising. A proper old-fashioned paranoid suspense thriller with shades of The Conversation and Enemy of the State. They don't (very often) make them like this anymore.

A great weekend at @celluloidscreams.bsky.social (15 years on from my first, which is wild). Highlights: Descendent (alien abductions and familial dramas), Head Like a Hole (a modern Outer Limits episode about bullshit jobs) and doc Silver Screamers (in which senior citizens make a horror movie).

Had an amazing time at @mayhemfilmfestival.bsky.social last weekend as ever. Highlights: Bone Lake (a twisty erotic thriller with great gore effects), Dead by Dawn (an inventive and very Polish neo-giallo) and Redux Redux (lo-fi sci-fi with a Terminator vibe), plus Bulk, Portal to Hell and Mag Mag.

Very proud of Wrack and Ruin: The Rubble Film at DEFA. It collects some of the earliest and most important East German films, all made in the immediate aftermath of WWII. Producing this box involved many, many hours of digging through the DEFA / PROGRESS Film archives – all of them worth it.

Next weekend, Masters of Cinema brings Paul Leni's The Cat and the Canary to the Showroom in Sheffield. This is, hands down, my favourite silent film – spooky and hilarious in equal measure. Just got my hands on Heart of Stone (1950), the first East German film shot in colour. It's a grand fairy tale from Paul Verhoeven (not that one, the German one) given the deluxe treatment on Blu-ray by Eureka / Masters of Cinema under the watchful eye of producer @craigimann.bsky.social.
