Very proud of Wrack and Ruin: The Rubble Film at DEFA. It collects some of the earliest and most important East German films, all made in the immediate aftermath of WWII. Producing this box involved many, many hours of digging through the DEFA / PROGRESS Film archives – all of them worth it.

Just got my hands on Heart of Stone (1950), the first East German film shot in colour. It's a grand fairy tale from Paul Verhoeven (not that one, the German one) given the deluxe treatment on Blu-ray by Eureka / Masters of Cinema under the watchful eye of producer @craigimann.bsky.social.

I love @mayhemfilmfestival.bsky.social and the people behind it. These announcements are amazing (will always get excited about new Ben Wheatley movies and films about demonic laundromats). Passes still a very reasonable £85 until Sunday.

Eureka currently really has the monopoly when it comes to releasing classic German genre cinema, including this East German Western, part of a series of anti-capitalist alternatives to the West German Karl May series and shot in similar locations in Yugoslavia.

July is a good month for Western fans at Eureka. High Noon is coming to 4K UHD and East Germany’s first Western, The Sons of Great Bear, is making its home video debut in the UK. Also a good month for me – High Noon is an all-timer and I’ve loved producing all of our DEFA releases so far.

I spent all of last week having a very cultured time in France, but have to be honest and admit I planned the entire trip around seeing the original Greta puppet from Gremlins 2 in Lyon’s Musée Cinéma et Miniature.

Recently announced by Eureka, DEFA's Heart of Stone! This is East Germany's first folktale adaptation and its first film in colour, a really macabre story of greed filled with weird and beautiful imagery. A blast to produce, with amazing art by @carlydraws.bsky.social and great expert contributions.

I gave my partner’s dad an old Blu-ray player and a copy of High Noon recently, and now he asks for more discs as gifts whenever a special occasion rolls around. (Re)introducing people who love films to physical media is a good feeling.

Particularly proud of Doctor Vampire as lead producer, and highly recommend Legend of the Eight Samurai (chanbara does Star Wars), Sirk in Germany (much funnier than you’d expect) and the 4K UHD of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure.

Appropriately, I had a meeting this afternoon to discuss the rough cut of Survivors, the documentary on Threads I've been producing over the last year. Not far off a final cut now.

I saw Heart Eyes last week (excellent), so for tonight's viewing: the underrated Valentine. I saw this for the first time when it came out – I'd have been about 12 – and have since come to love it for its diversion from the Scream formula. A very earnest throwback to early slashers and the giallo.

Popped into @80svideoshop.bsky.social and picked up Out of Bounds, a sort of YA 1980s action thriller in which Anthony Michael Hall(!) picks up a bag full of heroin at LAX and goes on the run from a drug lord. Excellent and could do with a decent HD release. Worth it for a Critters trailer alone.

Haven’t done one of these in a while, and given the January releases are out next week… here’s the last few months’ worth of Eureka titles, including the first batch I was lead producer on. Tons of favourites in here but I’m particularly proud of Feuillade, Black Tuesday and The Secret of NIMH.
