Can't believe we only just got round to visiting Beauchief Abbey in Sheffield! Founded around the Norman era in the 1100s, this was a medieval monastic house (with the 'monk's well pictured), now a functioning parish church surrounded by gorgeous woodland and a golf course. Lovely walking spot!

Most thatched-roof houses in the UK date to between the 16th-19th century. In the 10 miles we drove today between my mother-in-law's house and this (excellent) Indian restaurant in Dunmow, we counted 29 thatched rooves that we could easily see from the road, including the restaurant itself!
