I have a strong feeling that labs researching social media would benefit from developing shared infrastructure over time Shared tools for collecting, storing, and enriching data such that it's possible even for new PhD students to get going without having to write the whole stack themselves

I would add that there are few incentives for researches to collect / publish / document open data, and that our community often tends to treat open data as a commodity rather than as a worthy, first-order scientific contribution (like it is in other fields). We need to change that.
