Being a sole-proprietor (author, web designer, professional services, whatever) can be really hard to do on a low-budget, but even if you are doing the website on the cheap (100% valid), maybe also look at other sites to at least see how it looks and aim for that same kind of feel.

I recently took a grant-writing workshop from a person who absolutely knew what they were talking about and had top notch advice and process. Their website looks amateurish, though.
