10/ Next battle: fracking. Local communities mobilized through occupations, petitions, town meetings, & lobbying, forcing the government into a moratorium ✊ This was a clear example of civic engagement translating into policy change, showing that national movements rely on local persistence.

9/ Mid-2000s @friends-earth.bsky.social's #BigAsk campaign pushed Parliament to pass the #ClimateChangeAct, the 1st law in the world committing a country to drastically cut emissions 📜🌍 Grassroots organizing plus political lobbying proved transformative, setting a legal framework for climate action

8/ The Kingsnorth action, alongside early 2000s #climate camps, sent a clear message: coal expansion would not be allowed unchecked. Coal plants were scrapped, Kingsnorth’s chimneys demolished, & by 2024, the UK shut its last coal plant🔥🏭🚫 "Together we are unstoppable, another world is possible"✊💚

7/ By early 2000s, focus shifted to #climate. Blair’s plans for new coal power stations 🏭faced determined grassroots resistance. @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social staged a daring shutdown at Kingsnorth coal power station, & all activists were found not guilty by a jury, a major political & symbolic blow

6/ Protests became audacious. Activists organized mass raves on orbital roads, reclaimed streets,& even dug up roads with jackhammers! 🎶🚧 The Newbury battle was lost, but the broader Tory Roads for Prosperity plan was largely scrapped. Persistence & creativity mattered more than short-term victory✊🌈

5/ By the 1990s, grassroots confidence grew Campaigners challenged the government’s road-building programme, giving rise to folk heroes like Swampy @georgemonbiot.bsky.social also cut his teeth as an environmental protester, learning the craft of combining direct action with public storytelling

4/ 1970s–1980s victories set a global example: Acid rain was addressed, tackling industrial pollution at source 🌧️ CFCs banned, protecting the ozone layer 🛡️ International whaling moratorium enforced 🐋 The UK was emerging as a serious actor on the global environmental stage.

3/ For most of its history, the environmental movement has been grassroots, outsider, and oppositional. A few elite voices helped, not least King Charles III 👑, but real change came from ordinary people taking extraordinary action, proving sustained activism can reshape society.

July: The world’s top UN court affirmed that international treaties compel wealthy nations to curb global warming. This is a landmark for #ClimateJustice, strengthening legal arguments already being used by activists and communities worldwide. ⚖️

June: Insurers continued pulling back from coal mine coverage as #climate policies tightened. Without insurance, new coal projects become unviable. This is quiet but powerful pressure, driven by risk, regulation, and sustained campaigning.

May: Delft joined The Hague & Utrecht in banning fossil fuel advertising in public spaces ✊ These city-level actions matter: they challenge the social licence of fossil fuel companies & treat #climate harm like other public health threats

April: Renewables generated a record 32% of global electricity in 2024, according to @ember-energy.org. The transition is no longer hypothetical. Clean power is already reshaping energy systems, faster than many governments expected or planned for.

March: The Dutch government ruled out gas drilling in the Wadden Sea, one of Europe’s most sensitive ecosystems. A clear example of environmental protection winning out over extraction, after years of public pressure to defend this UNESCO World Heritage site 🌍

February: A major report confirmed clean energy costs will keep falling in 2025, further undercutting fossil fuels. 💲📉 This isn’t abstract: cheaper renewables mean fewer excuses for new coal, oil, & gas, and stronger leverage for #climate campaigners everywhere.

January: A Scottish court ruled the Rosebank oilfield approval unlawful, a major legal blow to one of the UK’s biggest undeveloped oil projects. ⛔🛢️ Years of community resistance & legal pressure paid off. Courts are increasingly forcing governments to follow their own #climate laws.
