The wild service tree is the rarer woodland relative of rowan and whitebeam, appearing to germinate only in areas of ancient woodland, for which it is an indicator. It is found on chalk and limestone, but also on nutrient-rich clays. π³

The flowers of Blackthorn, AKA Sloe, appear early spring, before the leaves, turning hedgerows into clouds of blossom. Brilliant for wildlife, it provides an early source of pollen for bees & insects, is a food plant for Brown Hairstreak Butterflies & its thorns provide protection for nesting birds

Catkin is derived from the Dutch word katteken, which means kitten, since the flowers look like fluffy kitten tails. Theyβre also known as lambβs tails for the same reason, and this name has a stronger association with the onset of spring. π» πΈMark Monk-Terry
