Trainee spotlight! Dr. Shyleen Frost is currently as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Alice Kane's lab. She is studying epigenetic patterns, including DNA methylation and histone modifications, and their relationship with frailty and sex differences in aging.

Trainee Spotlight! Sarah Tomlin is a PhD student in the Molecular and Cellular Biology program in the Lehrbach Lab at Fred Hutch. Sarah’s focus is on understanding how the scaffolding protein ECPS-1 influences proteasome regulation and elucidating the regulatory pathways that govern proteostasis.

Trainee Spotlight time! Ellen Bakotich is a Neuroscience PhD candidate in the Buffalo Lab, studying the neurobiological mechanisms of cognitive aging. Her thesis work investigates how normative aging affects eye movement behaviors in aged non-human primates viewing natural images.

Trainee Spotlight! Dr. Joe Armstrong is a postdoc in Maitreya Dunham’s lab in the dept of Genome Sciences. His research focuses on using baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and modified continuous culture systems known as aging chemostats to evolve yeast cells to extend replicative lifespan.

Trainee Spotlight! Each week you will meet 1 of the 12 amazing trainees from our BMHA T32 program. First, Emily Teets! Emily is a PhD candidate in the lab of Dr. Aakanksha Singhvi. They study the effect of disease-relevant genes on glia-neuron interactions and use C. elegans as a model organism.

Jessica Young, Co-Director of the UW Nathan Shock Center and the BMHA T32 program, and the Young Lab have been awarded two Weill Neurohub Investigator awards for funding 2025-2027. The first with the Allen Institute for Brain Science and UCSF; the second with UC Berkeley and UCSF. Congrats!

We also had 4 tetrad dissection microscopes join the lab this week, as part of the @uw-nsc.bsky.social renewal! These belonged to Matt Kaeberlein as part of their large scale efforts to measure replicative lifespan in yeast. We are now offering them as loaners for labs who want to try lifespans.
