I knew the story of David Haggart, as he killed someone escaping from Dumfries tolbooth, which is around where I grew up. We don't have many famous people in that part of the world. So, noted thief and rogue Davey, was, well, noted. I didn't know there was a film of his life.

One leaps instantly to mind. Goodbye to All That by Robert Graves. One of the most upsetting, but funniest books I've ever read. Clearly written by someone immensely damaged, and you can see him getting damaged. It took a toff to write this evisceration of the English class system

First watch: Richard Brooks' note-perfect 1967 adaptation of New Journalism milestone In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. This hits a sweet spot between documentary realism and stylized late noir (recalling Ida Lupino's The Hitch-hiker and Psycho and much in between). 1/3

First watch: Le Notti Blanche (1957), directed and co-written by Luchino Visconti from Dostoevsky’s short story White Nights. Strange and enchanting film that oscillates between melodrama and elements of dream logic. Fans of the nocturnal odyssey (cf. After Hours) should respond strongly to this 1/3
