FWIW, John Thune is taking a big risk on this too. By walking away from negotiations when Republicans control the Senate, he is betting Democrats cry “uncle” before Trump calls him and tells him to get rid of the filibuster. McConnell resisted Trump’s overtures. It’s TBD if Thune can.

If Trump tells him to trash the filibuster, that allows Tuberville, Cruz, Schmitt and Mike Lee to force bills to eliminate the Department of Education, raise the age of Social Security and ban abortion at 15 weeks to the floor and force his most endangered members to take tough votes.
