Upstairs, Elle sat curled in her bed, wand by her side. She traced patterns in the air, tiny sparks flickering before fading away, her chest heavy with questions she didn't have the words for yet. 𝘚𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭? 𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘭𝘭, 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥..

Alice's mouth opened, then closed. She didn't answer. She only turned away, staring out the window streaked with rain, her silence filled with worry she couldn't voice.

"And I get that," Alex said firmly, his hands spread in frustration. "But there's a difference between teaching her and making her feel like there's no right answer. Magic is a part of who she is, don't make her feel punished for it— Cassie suffered enough from that kind of treatment."

"Lazy?" Alex's tone rose, sharper than usual. "She's 8. She cleaned up the best way she knew how. You told her to fix it— she did. You're being far too hard on her." "I don't want her to grow up thinking magic is the answer to everything. She needs to learn how to live in the real world, too."

She crossed her arms, defensive. "What do you mean? She needs to learn. If she uses her magic carelessly now, what's going to happen when she's older? I want her to be smart about it, not lazy."

From the hallway, Alex had been listening. His jaw tightened as he stepped into the entryway, his voice low but edged with heat. "Alice, what was that?"

Alice shook her head, disappointment threaded in her gaze. "Go to your room. Your father will bring dinner up, and you can spend the rest of the night thinking of your actions." Elle's throat tightened, eyes burning as she turned & ran up the stairs, the slam of her door echoing through the house.

"Magic is supposed to be used wisely, not for every little thing. What happens when you depend on it so much you don't know how to do anything without it?" The sting of her words settled heavy in the room. Elle's small shoulders tensed. "But it was faster," she muttered, her voice small.

Alice's face hardened. "No, Elle. That's not what I meant." Elle blinked, confused. "But I—" "You can't solve everything with magic," Alice snapped, her tone more brittle than she intended. "I asked you to use a towel, not a spell."

Elle glanced down at the wet footprints and puddles, but only for a second. With a small flick of her wrist, a shimmer of magic curled from her fingertips. "𝘚𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘰!" In an instant, the puddles were done, as though they never existed. Pleased with herself, she turned back to her mom. "All clean!"

She dramatically stomped up the steps and into the front door, her hair plastered to her cheeks and her coat dripping, leaving water across the wood floors. Alice's sharp voice cut through the warm hum of the house. "Elle, stop right there. Look at this mess. Go get a towel and clean it up."

She ran through the yard with her arms outstretched, boots splashing in puddles as though they were portals to another world. Her laughter carried over the patter of raindrops, bright and unrestrained. "Elle! Dinner!" She heard her father call from the door.

Ellaway, in her bright raincoat and boots, gleefully stomped through puddles, laughing and twirling as the rain came down. Her umbrella was no use, as it was mostly just drug behind her. It was innocent and joyful— a rare moment of freedom.

Rain was rare in Strangerville. Fall had come, and the desert air smelled earthy and damp, puddles forming in the usually dry streets. The rain was a welcome distraction from everything Elle normally did.

As she hurried back towards Caleb, the realm seemed a lot more welcoming. What had felt so frustrating just an hour ago, now promised friendship and discovery. Her first lesson had been tricky, but she knew now that she wasn’t alone, and that everyone started the same. 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦.

A distant voice called through the glade. "Ellaway! Time for more practice, my firefly!" It was Caleb. Elle jumped. "Oh! That's my grandpa. I have to go." Chiyo quickly offered a hug. "It was good to meet you, Elle. Maybe we'll see each other around?" "Definitely!" She beamed. "Bye, Chiyo!"

"It's all about finding your own rhythm, just like dancing." Elle watched, a different kind of spark igniting within her. Chiyo's effortless grace was inspiring, not intimidating. The frustration from earlier didn't feel so heavy now. It wasn't about being instantly good; it was about the journey.

Elle listened, fascinated. Chiyo spoke with such easy familiarity about magic. "You're really good," she said truly. "So, you don't go to magic school yet?" "Not for a couple more years," Chiyo explained. "Grandma says magic is best learned at home first," she said and made another orb in her palm.

Chiyo giggled. "Aw, don't worry! Everyone starts somewhere. I've been doing this since I was tiny. Grandma says I popped out with a wand in my hand!" She exaggerated. "We live in Mt. Komorebi. She teaches me everything. She says the more you practice, the more magic feels like a part of you."

The girl looked up, her eyes like obsidian. "Oh! Just practicing. Grandma says it's good to keep the magic flowing," she smiled. "I'm Chiyo." "Ellaway, but everyone just calls me Elle," she replied. "That's amazing! I can't even make a spark," she felt the pang of frustration again.

Elle rounded a bend and saw another girl around her age standing under a tree. She seemed to be conjuring magic of her own, effortlessly, and Elle stared in awe. She approached cautiously. "What'cha doin'?" She whispered, mesmerized.

Caleb knelt to her level. “Magic isn’t about forcing, Elle. It’s a whisper, not a shout,” he smiled gently. “How about we take a little break for now? Go explore.” She sniffled, but the idea of exploring the realm was immediately appealing. “Okay,” she mumbled, & without another word, she took off.

She tried again & again. Each attempt yielded nothing but a frustrating fizzle. The initial sparkle in her eyes dimmed, replaced by a stubborn frustration & red glow. Her confidence was rapidly corroding. “It’s not working!” she wailed, stomping her foot, her necklace glowing red. “I can’t do it!”

She nodded & closed her eyes, picturing a small glowing sphere in her mind. She stretched out her hand & her brow furrowed. At first, nothing happened. Then, a faint spark—a pathetic flicker that died almost instantly. “Don’t worry,” Caleb said patiently. “It takes practice. Try again. Breathe.”

They stepped through the shimmering portal, and Caleb led her to a secluded glade. “Alright, my budding enchantress,” he began. “Today, we start simple. A light orb. Focus your intent, feel the magic gather in your core, and then, with a clear mind, project it.”

Beside her, Caleb kneeled and brushed the hair out of her face. “Ready, little firefly?” Elle nodded vigorously. She felt a surge of confidence; she’d watched her Grandpa perform countless small spells in her lifetime, from cleaning up puddles to making a full meal appear. How hard could it be?

Elle bounced on her toes, a whirlwind of nervous energy barely contained by her tiny boots. Before her, a swirling vortex of emerald and amethyst light pulsed & expanded, an entrance to a world she’d only ever heard whispered about in bedtime stories. This was it: the 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙢. Her first lesson.

The rest of the school day passed in a blur & as the final bell rang, signaling the end of the day, Elle grinned at Austin. “Saturday. Ranch-Palooza. Be ready for me!” In the pick-up line, Austin's mom had been watching. "Have you made a friend?" "Hope not," he muttered.. "Austin!" She scolded.

Austin couldn't help but feel nervous. Her, coming over? He'd have to talk to her more? Show her his room? What if he runs out of things to say to her? What if he doesn't know what to talk about? His mind was running a million miles per minute when the bell rang and they had to go back to class.
