“Wait. I… maybe we should have some tea.” Ozzy shifted on her feet, unsure. “Please.” She swallowed hard, but nodded, “Okay.” Here’s to hoping the tea wasn’t Hinoki’s version of ‘𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘭’.

Herbs, her ass. Ozzy wouldn’t be surprised if the woman took copious amounts of 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘴, hard drugs, and probably went under hypnosis as an added bonus to forget her unwanted children. “This was a mistake. I should go.” She turned to leave, only to have Hinoki reach out and stop her.

Ozzy stood still, lost, confused, and wondering why she didn’t listen to Axl. Finally, after what felt like hours of silence, Hinoki moved around a butterfly enclosure to face Ozzy, and spoke, “That wasn’t a dream?” “Clearly not.” “I think I took a few herbs to forget that.”

This lady was crazy. “My dad is Zale Van Amstel, you knew him when he & your husband were in Gnomes & Roses.” The woman would not be still, so Ozzy followed her around the room as she spoke. “You left me & my twin brother at his house after we were born.” Nothing.

The older woman laughed, “No, silly, it’s Hinoki! Are we on too many drugs already? How old are we? That’s important to know what to fix!” “I’m your daughter!” She yelled out, exasperated beyond belief. Hinoki looked at her like she felt sorry for her, “Aw, you’re confused, must be the drugs.”

Deep breath. “I think we’re having a misunderstanding.” “Doubtful. I took all my herbs this morning. Or was that yesterday?” “I’m so confused.” “Oh, I have other herbs for that! Let me get you some.” “No! No, please. Can we… frack. Look, my name is Ozzy.”

“You!“ “Me?“ “Yes!“ So confused. “Uh, what was the trip that was real?” “That I went back in time! Here you are! Proof! We need to make a list of all the things to do right this time! Like, figure out why Kale and Cabbage are important!” “The leafy greens?” “Why would they be green?”

Less than a minute later, she was led into a large solarium, where the legendary actress Hinoki Plott stood. Their eyes met. “Fynnnnnn! I told you it wasn’t a bad trip!” “Uh, trip?” Ozzy was so confused. “Yes, he said it was the herbs, but I knew it was real!” “Real?“ “Yes!“ “What is real?“

Three days later, on that media trip with her dad, Ozzy found herself standing outside the door of her birth mother. A very bored-looking woman opened the door, “Yeah?” “Um… hi? I uh.. I’m… uh, is Ms. Plott here?” “Sure. Come in.” Okay. That was easy?

He kept talking, but she moved away, smothering her squeals, as she ran to her room to start picking out a wardrobe. This was perfect! Her dad would be so busy, and have so many people around him, and so much press, he would not miss her slipping away at all!

“Can we move the date?” A pause. “Yeah, I can be in Del Sol in three days, it’s the only day Clo doesn’t have something planned for Ax & Oz, but is that too soon for a promotional-” Another pause, then he laughed, “Right, I am selling out stadiums, so it shouldn’t be a big deal.”

Ugh. They were turning 18 tomorrow, & Clover had 2 weeks of family craziness planned. Oz had to get to Del Sol without raising suspicions while she knew her bio mom was there! Going w/Axl would have been fine, alone would not work. Passing Zale’s office, she stopped when she heard him on the phone…

“No, now get the frack out.” He flipped her off as he said it. “I hate you!” She turned to stomp out of the room. “Until the next time you need something!” He yelled out as she exited.

“Who cares if I’m gross and disrespectful? About someone who abandoned her kids? I don’t owe that woofrum a damn fracking thing.” “Fine! But at least come with me! I don’t want to go alone!” “No.” “Axllllll, come oooonnnnn, pleeeeease!” She whined and stomped her feet at him.

“Clo is our mom. She’s raised us since we were babies, it’s like betraying all she is & has been to us if we go tramping off to Del Sol to meet some cheap celebrity who happened to push us out of her overused vagina.” “Gross! And disrespectful to talk like that, ew. You’re just bitter about it.”

“Come ooonnnnnnn, Ax, haven’t you ever been curious?” “No. Not once.” “Really?” Skeptical emotion filled Ozzy’s face and voice. “Really.” They glared at one another until Axl rolled his eyes at his twin and continued on...

She left her sister there to sob, ignoring the jab of pain in her own heart, but knowing the girl had to come to terms with real life. Their dad & Clo were babying Ozzy too much, she was on a path of self-destruction if this continued!

Lennon was surrounded by mundanes in her life, her mom, her other siblings, many of her family. And after over a decade of dealing with Ozzy’s tantrums, the normally cheerful siren had no sympathy for this half-sibling, “Get over yourself, or I, for one, 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 celebrate when you’re gone.”

“Or is that your goal? Are you so narcissistic that you want to keep everyone around you miserable to feel better about yourself?” “I’m going to die before mom! Before everyone else! You will all forget me!” “We will all be happy you’re gone if this is how we remember you!” “GET OUT!”

“I had nothing growing up, bitch! No dad, no money because he left us, I worked my ass off since I was a kid to provide for me and my mom until he showed back up! Be grateful you have dad and Clo who love you, who want you to be happy, and stop making them so damn miserable!”

Ozzy jumped out of bed, “Get out of my room!” “Oh, yeah, your room, in your mansion, where you live with a rock star. That’s your problem, you're a spoiled brat who's never had to work for anything in your damn, useless life.” “You’re one to talk!”

“Yeah, selfish. Wah, I’m not magical. Wah, I can’t be happy. Wah, poor me! I can name thirteen cousins right now who were born into the family of sirens who are just regular humans like you, not to mention my brother and sister from my mom. And not one of them acts like such a little shit.”

Two floors up, Lennon leaned against the door to Ozzy’s room with a frown on her face, “You’re such a little bitch.” Ozzy jerked up, “The frack is your problem?” “You. Every fracking time I come over, dad and Clo are sobbing over your whiny, selfish ass.” “Selfish!?”

Zale blew out a long breath, “She’s been in therapy since Jagger started showing signs of magic.” Tears from Clover as Zale took her hand, “I don’t know what else to do for her.” Zale moved to hug his wife, both lost & confused on what to do for their daughter, who felt so lost and alone.

Lennon groaned, “It’s always serious with Ozzy, this is so old, she needs to accept it and move on! Frack, I’m bored!” She hopped up and went waltzing out of the room. She was so over this non-stop pity-party from her sister!

Zale opened his mouth to reply, then saw the way Lennon’s eyes were dancing, and lips twitching as she struggled to hold back a grin. Clover seemed to realize her step-daughter was playing air-head at the same time. “This is serious! She’s really struggling!”

Seeing that Clover was about to strangle his eldest, Zale spoke up, “You’re a siren, kid, things work differently for you. It’s not healthy for a young human girl to put her worth in, ya know, that.” “You and mom are human, I wouldn’t be here if you two didn’t spread yourselves around for fun!”

“She’s only 17 & already putting far too much value between her legs! Where it does not belong!” “I find lots of value in sex, it’s so healing when I’m stressed, maybe it helps her too?” Lenn’s voice was so innocent! The plants in the room began to rustle, a sure sign that Clover was riled up.

“What's wrong with a boy obsession?” Pipped up Lennon, who had a massive one of her own, “It’s a hobby.” Zale barked out a laugh, which he quickly tried to cover after receiving a glare from his wife. “Not helpful, Lenn.” Said an exhausted Clo. The siren's lips formed a pout, “Why?”

Hours later, Lennon -Zale’s oldest, who inherited the siren gene from the Van Amstel’s was listening to her stepmother cry to her dad about Ozzy -again. “She has no interest in anything besides boys, nothing to take this obsession with not being magical away from the forefront of her mind.”

So they had another. Clover, with her endless patience and love. Ozzy, with her endless insecurities and inability to find peace with herself. Both cried, both wished there was something they could do to change things, but there wasn’t.

“You are my little girl, always.” “But I’m not! I’ll be old & wrinkly & dying, and you will still be like this & forget about me!” “You know that’s not true, we’ve talked about this.” The hard talks, one a magical mother had to have with a mundane child. They’d had to have too many over the years.

This wasn’t a new outburst, it was one Clover had been hearing for many years, ever since Jagger first showed signs of magic. All Ozzy wanted was to have her as a biological mother, so she could feel as though she belonged somewhere, belonged among all the magic.

“Oz?” The soft voice of the woman who raised her had Ozzy turning to face the doorway. Clover stood there, looking concerned. “You okay?” Tears came without her even trying, “No! No, I’m not okay! How can I be okay living in this house without being your daughter!”

For the first time in many years, Baran finds himself keeping secrets from those he loves. He tells himself that every living thing deserves a chance. He tells himself that understanding is always preferable to destruction. What he fears most is that he may be wrong. Render: @draumade.bsky.social
