Her words were lost in sobs as Elsie held her, her own body too exhausted to cry once again. It was over. She’d closed that chapter of her life. And hopefully, after tonight, life would take an upward swing.

“Where did he go?” “This cave we found once in Shang Simla, but after that… I don’t know. We can never know.” Charlene grabbed Elsie in a tight hug, sobbing, “Thank you. Thank you for saving him. He’s been through so much, I know what he did is unforgivable, but…”

“I sent him away first, I couldn’t bear to let him die. I had to do something.” “After what he did to you… I… understand-” “No. I could never. I would never. But no one can know, okay. No one can ever know.” Charlene nodded, “Okay. Yeah. I believe you.” Soft shock filled her words.

“I did not kill him. Hey, look at me. I did not kill him.” Charlene looked confused, “But you burned the prison, there was live footage of the destruction! They said nothing was left of him…” A sob shook her.

Elsie sat on the floor at her feet, “I didn’t kill him.” Charlene whimpered but did not move, misery filling the face of the woman who loved Crispin as if he were her own.

Home meant more agents, which she quickly sent away before heading inside to face Charlene, who was sitting on the couch with tears streaming down her face. Some dried, some new. The woman had probably been crying for hours.

The distant sounds of their gasps filled her ears as Elsie exited the building and disappeared in a swirl of fire. No standing portal needed to exit the realm -which was unheard of. No crystal portal either. No, just literal teleportation, the rarest of gifts.

Whatever. They all knew what she was before she arrived, then she destroyed a large chunk of the magical prison, and now they’d witnessed an unexpected display of that power right in front of their faces. Guess there wasn’t any reason to pretend to be normal anymore.

Silence. Every soul felt the deadly magic Winnie wielded, & they saw Elsie stand there & take it without a flinch. It confirmed every rumor, every whispered gossip. She felt fear fill the chamber as she walked out, felt awe, & the reach of desperate hands believing her a holy. Just great.

Winnie was escorted out while still raging. Elsie glanced at the cameras around the room, knowing all of this was airing live on SEN - Spellcater Entertainment Network. Too bad casters had social media over a century before mundanes, she couldn’t even wish to have been born in an age before it.

Her arms were behind her back, shackled with null cuffs. Elsie’s heart ached with the need to tell the woman she’d not ended Crispin’s life, but it wasn’t possible. Winnie was intoxicated too often these days, she could never know her son still lived. It wouldn’t be safe for him or Elsie.

Elsie simply let it hit her, the sting not pleasant, but nothing to worry about. “I’m so sorry.” Her words were sincere, but meaningless to Winnie, as she looked at the woman's stunned face. In the moment when Crispin’s mother froze from shock over her magic doing nothing, agents rushed her.

Several casters moved forward, trying to calm her, but she magically shoved them aside, proving the power she so rarely showed off. “You do not deserve to live!” She screamed out, flinging her hands out with deadly magic that sent everyone ducking to avoid being hit.

As her testimony concluded, she stepped down, more than ready to leave this place. But Winnifred Bamford, Crispin's mother, who was seated in the crowd, rose. “That’s it!? You cannot let her leave! She murdered my child! She killed my baby! She should be in chains!”

The day had been exceedingly long, and night was close to being over by the time the defensive council rose to grill Elsie. The barrister was brutal, but nothing he did could rattle her. Morgyn prepared her well, and she was able to keep her emotions in check while the barrister grilled her.

The next few hours were even more exhausting as Elsie stood in the trial chamber to recount her tale of that fateful night they visited the circus.

Things were chaotic for a bit. Morgyn came to escort her, a handful of SIA agents she considered friends showed up, so many people wanted to check on her-it was overwhelming. As she was led into the sterile courtroom, she realized that the surrounding crowds were an even mix of compassion & hatred.

A small smile from Minera, “Good girl, you're strong like your father, he would be proud of you today.” That was hands down the nicest thing that woman had ever said to Elsie. She didn’t like it. She didn’t like not hating this woman, it did not feel natural!

She and Minera had never gotten along, so this was… unnerving. The elder patted her cheek, then stepped back. “Do you feel up to testifying today? We can get this over with so you can go home to your child and have no need to return.” Elsie nodded, “Yes. Please.”

“I killed him.” She shakily replied. Her voice quivering with exhaustion, and Watcher knew she’d been an actual emotional wreck enough to know this drill. “And good riddance to him.” Elsie looked into purple eyes filled with compassion, which shocked her.

“It’s okay, child. After what he did to you, it’s amazing you allowed him to live as long as you did. Were I you, he would have been a charred corpse on the floor of his home the night I found out.” Elsie gave a jerky nod in reply, her body tense and already exhausted from being an emotional wreck.

She looked a mess, and was genuinely surprised when, after a very long interrogation, Minerva Charm came over and ran her fingers beneath Elsie’s eyes and over her face. Magic followed every slow touch, and she knew the elder was cleaning her face. What the frack?

Elsie hid her grin behind a pained groan. She accomplished what she came here to do. Now it was time to deal with the aftermath.

“Where is the boy? Did he survive?” Dark Goth eyes latched onto her. She let her body collapse, pitiful whimpers leaving her lips as she heard the agents discussing how everything was gone, ancient stone walls, everything, not even dust left of anything.

Minerva watched with eagle eyes as she approached, while Cornelia looked around in horror. “It’s not possible. These walls have stood for millennia.” Cornelia. Minerva’s brow arched, “And yet they never met phoenix fire.”

“I’m so sorry.” Elsie whimpered out, her body visibly shaking, “Our argument got out of control, I… I don’t know what happened.” She let her body sway, causing an agent to reach out and steady her. And just in time for two council members to arrive.

“Burn them all!” Came a screaming voice from down the hall. Her grandmother. “Burn them all, baby girl!” The agent passed her off to another, who dragged the cackling elder away. Well, at least that helped sell the crazy Van Amstel bloodline, Elsie hoped they all leaned into that knowledge today.

She let the dried tears and streaked makeup speak for themselves as she spelled her eyes to fill once again, “I don’t know.” Her voice was shaking, yay! “I don’t know.” It’s all she said, over and over, as agents filled the prison.

Lack of control was a problem she did 𝙣𝙤𝙩 have, but no one here needed to know that. Outwardly, unlocking her pain did as she required, she was shaking & knew her vitals were wild. She moved through the building, letting rogue flames die as she passed them. An agent ran up, “Els, what happened!?”

She let chaos reign, let it become proof of her losing control, before she grabbed hold of her misery. She tucked it all away again, locked it deep inside, spread her fire over the damaged parts of her soul, & soothed the scars away until she was left whole once again. Neat & Tidy, a job well done.

The prison went into chaos. Prisoners began escaping their cells, trying to break free of the building. Battles raged as fire that ate everything, leaving not even ash, spread like an inferno. Agents were frantically calling in help.

She let the misery consume her, she let it eat away at her until she was a crumpled ball of a shattered soul, until her fire went wild, consuming the cell, the walls, crumbling the prison as she screamed and wailed a banshee’s pain with a phoenix’s destruction.

She needed to shatter. So Elsie went into the deep, dark place within. The place her resurrection soothed & healed, & ripped it open. She let in all the pain of her childhood, all the pain of life, the murder of her father, her mother’s rejection, Ren, Harper, Crispin, she let it all out.

He stepped through the portal, disappearing from her life forever. Elsie stood there for a moment before letting it close. Then she closed her eyes, and went to her knees, taking a deep breath to ready herself for this next step.

“Now decide. Or I’m leaving.” “Okay. Frack. Okay. Yeah. Get me out of here.” She wasted no more time, opening a portal quickly. He moved forward, then paused, looking back at her, “Joy-” “Go.” Her words interrupted him, she was done talking. There was no more to say.

His jaw and fists clenched. “Death or Life.” She said again. “Life without you…” His voice trailed off. “You will never have a life with me. No matter what. You ruined that.”

They stood frozen, staring at one another, knowing the gravity of what was about to happen. “I could leave La Voisin to watch over you two.” And, due to their SIA tattoos, he could see through his crow familiar’s eyes. She glared at him. “If I see her, I will fry her. No contact. None.”

“Any preference on a starting location?” “Do you remember that cave on the outskirts of Shang Simla? The one with the hidden portal & all those runes we found on that SIA mision?” “Yeah, that’s a good start.”

“You could come with me, bring Jack, we could start a new life together.” “There will never be an ‘us’ again, Crispin. Do not delude yourself into thinking otherwise.” He nodded.
