She didn’t know how long she lay on the floor sobbing. All Elsie knew was that nothing had ever broken her like this before. The betrayal. The violation. She was sick inside. She was once again, nothing but ashes on the floor.

“They’ll kill me, Elsie. They’ll kill me.” “Not without a trial. And not if they can't catch you. I’m only warning you because I fracking love you, you disgusting, cowardly jackass! Now get out!”

“She was going to kill me! And you!” “You had options! Now get out! Get out before I call SIA!” He was in panic mode now, “You can’t do that!” “I can and I will! I have never been so disgusted by someone I trusted like I am with you! GET OUT!

“Tanvi has abused me my entire life. When she gave me the bottle, when she told me to do this… I swear I didn’t want to, but I was so watcherdamned afraid.” “A fracking coward!” She screamed, “If you loved me, you would have come to me before violating my body!”

“You were my friend, my partner for years, my life depended on you! I trusted you more than I ever trusted myself! & then you wormed your way into my heart, & now you’ve shattered that too! How could you do this to me!?” He was crying as well, & looking just as broken.

“Elsie, please-” “What can you say!?” She managed to scream out between sobs, “What you did is a violation of my body, of my life! How could you!? You! Of all people, you! I trusted you more than I've ever trusted another soul!"

She broke down completely, falling to the ground as sobs wracked her body. This was a betrayal so deep it cut into the very core of her soul. He tried to come near, and she blasted him away, sending him crashing into the couch.

“I don’t care if she had the entire council on her side! You had choices! And instead you took away mine!” “There was no choice!” “You didn’t want to find one! You chose this, you did this to me without my consent! How could you do this! How could you do this to me! To me!”

“You should have come to me! Talked to me! Morgyn could have helped us!” “She's too powerful! I’m not strong enough to take her on, I couldn’t risk it!” “But I am! I could have done something! Morgyn could have done something!” “She is the fracking Sage of Mischief!”

“She said if I didn’t give you the potion, she’d torture us, take what she needed, & kill us.” Elsie’s head dipped low, tears dripping onto her chest with the torment pouring from her. “I had no choice!” “You had choices! But you’re too much of a coward to have taken them!”

“Elsie-” “Liar! Tell me what you did. What did she do to make you do this? I know it was her, Crispin. I know it.” He started pacing, rubbing his head, and letting out a frustrated sound. “Tell me what you did!?” She screamed yet again.

He froze. “You love me?” Tears were falling like a flood down her face, “Yes! And I can’t believe you’d do this to me!” He moved to her. She moved back. “You are everything to me. I’d never do anything to hurt you.” She stared into his eyes, “Liar.”

“I said I did nothing!” “You're fracking lying!” “I’m not! Why won’t you believe me!” “Because I love you too, Crispin! I’m fracking head over heels in love with you, and I know you too well! I know you’re lying!”

Suddenly, everything was clear to her. “Was this real? Us? Was it real? Or did your grandmother have you play me to get what she wanted?” “Frack that, Joy. You know fracking well, I’m in love with you!” “You can’t be. You can’t be in love with me and do this to me.”

“What did you do?” Horror filled her, “What did you do!?” “Nothing! I didn’t do anything!” “Watcher, you did. You did. Frack. Frack! Are you fracking kidding me!?” Raw panic was clear on his face.

“Just some seller at a booth.” A lie. She always knew when he was lying, probably one of the few who knew his tells. “Stop lying to me.” “Stop fracking accusing me of whatever this is!”

“It has everything to do with it.” Morgyn contacted her last night with confirmation. A highly forbidden potion was contained in that bottle, one that, by law, demanded the death of whoever made it.

Her instincts were firing hard. “Crispin, where did you get that potion the night we went to Magic Town?” “What does that have to do with anything?”

“You’re lying. You’re usually better than this. Half of your job is lying, why are you failing at it so hard right now?” “Lying? You just told me you’re pregnant, it’s called shock.”

“You’re not going to ask how this happened? The fact that it would take both of us wanting this for it to happen?” “Yeah. Right. The surprise of it all shook me, I guess.”

“So you’re fine with this?” “I mean, it’s a surprise, but yeah. Okay.” She frowned.

It was best to just get it out. She stopped pacing and turned to face him. “I’m pregnant.” She watched his body go still, hands clench, before he cleared his throat to speak. “Okay.” “Okay?” “Okay. Yeah.”

“Then what's going on? What's wrong?” She took a deep breath, and motioned for him to follow her into the living room, where she proceeded to pace, unsure how to tell him.

“No.” “No?” “You aren’t leaving me.” She let out a shocked laugh, “I’m not trying to leave, you idiot.” “You’re not?” “No!” “Thank frack!”

She stepped into their home, panic tightening its grip around her chest. He was smiling when he saw her, then frowned as he neared. “What’s wrong?” “We have to talk.”

“Do you want me to go with you?” “No. I can do this, I hope.” Frack. What was he going to think? Her breathing was erratic, and her heart was about to come out of her chest.

She spent the night in her mom’s guest room, and as they ate breakfast the following morning, she received a text. “Crispin is back.” Her appetite disappeared, and she was suddenly extremely nauseous.

“He still clueless about the information you’re digging up?” “Of course. Plus, my government clearance is higher than his.” “You are so badass, mom.” “I’ll let that language pass, because yes, I am.” They both laughed, and a small bit of relief filled Elsie as she sat there.

Color her impressed! Elsie sat. Exhaustion was riding her hard. “Stay here tonight, let me take care of you until you figure things out.” “Not with ℎ𝑖𝑚 here.” “Marcos is away for the week on a business trip of his own.”

“He works for the intelligence agency, as you did, correct?” Elsie’s mouth fell open, “How the frack do you know that?” “Language!” But Kira laughed, “Darling, I’m an alien ambassador, I have many connections. And I used every one I had to keep up with you over the years.”

Kira gave a soft smile, “I’d like to meet him.” Elsie swallowed. “Okay. Yeah. He’s doing… stuff, right now.” Her elegant way of saying he’s on an SIA mission.

“I don’t know what I am.” “But you are pregnant?” “Yes.” “And the father is the boy you’re living with?” “Yeah. Crispin.”

She arrived back in Strangerville after midnight. Her mom answered the door after only a few moments, quickly ushering Elsie in. “What did you find out? Are you okay?”

“Well, you have six more months to figure things out.” “So glad I’m not mundane. Can you imagine only having nine months to deal with this?” “I’ve always envied that, the last five months are always the worst.” “Great.”

“It’s okay. Pregnancy is not something most of us handle well, even when the baby is desired.” A pause. “How are you feeling about all this?” “I’m still in shock, I don’t know how to even… I don’t know. I just… I don’t know.”

“Yeah, but you know how passive-aggressive spellcasters can be. She could have been secretly trying to poison me with those treats!” Nixie laughed at the absurdity. She’d met the adorable housekeeper several times and knew the woman had a heart of gold.

“It’s stupid I didn’t know sooner. My clothes were not fitting right, but I just thought Crispin’s housekeeper didn’t like me and was messing with my things.” Nixie laughed, “You know she likes you, the amount of special treats she makes that you text to our group chat speaks volumes."
