We’re testing a new all butter puff pastry for our sausage rolls. For decades, we’ve been using a fat called “FlakeMore,” which works well for our purposes but has become cost prohibitive. Butter has become more affordable to use & tastes much better. Always trying to improve.

The fanciest “bangers & mash” I’ve eaten. From Chartreuse in Detroit, the sausage is handmade, the mash is pierogi, and there’s sauerkraut, candied jalapeño, & a lovely crème fraiche like sauce. Stunningly good & much different than the version we serve at popups.

It’s National Pistachio Day! Our second most popular shortbread variety happens to be pistachio. We chop California pistachios & add them to our buttery shortbread along with almond flavor. Why almond? Almonds & pistachios share similar flavor compounds.

I rarely drink barrel aged beers & this one reminds me why. Initially, this is a delightfully complex stout. It’s like a chocolately, boozy root beer float with notes of wintergreen. Then the barrel aging takes hold & it falls apart. Oddly buttery & a touch salty, the finish ruins it for me.

This book is so well written and compelling. This is the type of historical narrative I adore. It’s a methodical, impeccably researched text. I can’t stop listening to it.

New spot opened near me. Their smash burger looks good but didn’t deliver on flavor. No seasoning on patties, no onions, burger sauce was overly sweet. Seems like every place has a smash burger now, so they need to be exceptional. This one could be great with some tweaking.

Maybe it’s just me but everywhere I go, there’s very little energy. It’s very cold in Michigan right now & January is always slow & dreary but this feels so different. Just overwhelmingly somber.

For the first time, I’m listening to an audiobook with very poor editing. At least 5 times in the first chapter, the narrator fumbles words and repeats phrases that certainly were not meant to be repeated. It’s strangely jarring.
