I love looking at my own work. What I like most is having the initial idea and the final image side by side for comparison. One represents the quick initial idea and the other several days of effort. Why? Because during the process I barely spend any time with either of them! /thread

Here's how I learned anatomy so that it stuck! First of all you don't need to know all the muscles for it to be useful. Going into great detail is exhausting and worse sometimes we do a big dedicated study and we come out no better. We must test our knowledge right away. Let me explain

Turn me to stone! I loved working on this piece. It's so beautiful! I just want to stare at it's gorgon gaze and adjust small things over and over. Turning vague imagination into reality is the best. Painting is the best.

Don't sleep on Lazy Nezumi. If you are using Windows this might just be one of the most powerful art tools for all your art programs you can imagine.

Exercise for my students: Painting Analysis Effort is not enough. We need to think about our paintings deeply. How do we learn thinking? Questioning our favourite painters pieces! What does "that" do? Paint it out and find out! It's a digital file. Torture it for information. You'll learn so much!

Being on a board and moving is objectively cool. Snow, Water - boards: Amazing things. Now Air-- Honestly a death sentence even if "magic". You lose your balance and bye-bye. Wont stop me from sketching them. Let's call them Flying Coffins because first you fly then you'll need a coffin.

If you have any questions about drawing anatomy specific stuff comment on this post and I'll do a follow up later with answers & examples. Remember: Drawing any part of the body creates a limit where the rest can go. Knowing these limitations gives us so many options to draw believable creatures.

A confession: Every 3 or 4 months I am overcome with a compulsion to sketch, ink & paint images featuring horses. This has been an enduring theme of my working life for several years at this point. Weeks go by without sparing a thought to that beautiful equine creature. Then, suddenly! Horse.

A trap that is easy to fall into as an artist is "I must finish this epic idea!" Ok: 3 years later how is it going? Why is that shameful? You've done NOTHING WRONG. You took a big bite and got a tummy ache. Spit it out! Quit bad projects. Reflect, start something else.You can't quit? OK:ASK FOR HELP

This treat of a painting marked the end of the project it was made for. It felt so complete & sincere in it's emotional quality. It came out like a fully formed rose bush through a concrete road. Was the way I approached painting wrong? The path it took me down is great. I'm so happy I made it.

I'm tired of the toxic sentiment sentiment that one must despise ones own work to make "true art". Why is it wrong to enjoy your own work? I love it, why else would I continue despite it's enormous difficulty? I love them. I love my paintings, I love my sketches. They demand: Do your best! So I do.

In 2014 I made this piece titled "They stood like memory". I've kept a print of it at my desk ever since. It's the piece that convinced me that I should truly pursue being an artist. Not from any external response but from how it stirs me. Makes me think.

There's something nice about this painting. I come back to it and it makes me imagine. Plots and threads going anywhere and no where. I leave the experience wanting to paint more usually. What a lovely piece, even with it's flaws.
