It's interesting to look at fungi under the microscope. This picture shows the spore-bearing cells (basidia) on the edge of a gill of a basidiomycete. This fungus has two-spored basidia. Many other basidiomycete fungi have four-spored basidia. #mycology

The Mid-Yorkshire Fungus Group held a foray at Guisecliff Wood, near Pateley Bridge, today. During the outing, we saw a number of leccinum versipelle (Orange Birch Bolete).

Mycena olivaceomarginata (Brown-Edge Bonnet) is a common mushroom that likes pastures and old lawns. It's a good idea to carry a hand lens for dealing with species such as this one. I spotted this group this morning at Vale Head Park, Hemsworth.

I found this impressive clump of Kuehneromyces mutabilis (Sheathed Woodtuft) in an area of willow carr on the edge of Hemsworth. #fungi

Stropharia coronilla is showing itself here and there in the big meadow at Brockadale. The specific epithet "coronilla" refers to the ring on the stipe, which resembles a crown.

Tubaria dispersa (Hawthorn Twiglet),which grows fom decaying haws, was a pleasing find at Brockadale yesterday. The mustard-coloured gills make identification straightforward. This is a new one for the Brockadale list. #fungi #mycology

At Brockadale, I found Cerioporus squamosus (Dryad's Saddle) growing on a stump a few metres away from another stump on which there was Polyporus tuberaster (Tuberous Polypore). One of the images shows the decurrent pores of P tuberaster. #fungi #mycology

I found Typhula quisquiliaris (Bracken Club) growing in abundance on decaying bracken at Hole of Horcum yesterday.

Tucked in amongst the grass at the edge if a path at Hole of Horcum is Rugosomyces carneus (Pink Domecap). This used to be called Calocybe carnea. With this species, you sometimes have to concentrate to detect the pink in the cap. #fungi

The fall of a small part of a cliff face at Whitby gave an unusual chance to have a look at a sand martin nest. There's a surprising amount of nesting material. Lots of hole-nesting birds don't make a substantial nest. @charliebingham.bsky.social

Daedaleopsis confragosa (Blushing Bracket) was the only fresh-looking fungus that I encountered during a walk yesterday. Others looked pretty dehydrated. #FungiFriday

What better use for the back of a letter than to test out some new colours? These bright swatches were found in the correspondence of antiquary and botanist Dawson Turner (1775–1858). A little bit of colour living in a world of paper and ink.🎨
