This morning, NSEA spoke at the State Board of Education meeting. Item 10 relates to creating a policy agenda to guide its engagement with the #NVLeg. Nevada needs more aggressive voices to advocate for public education and the Board should adopt these policies. Be that voice students need.

"These programs aren’t luxuries, they are lifelines. For the last several years, I have worked in an after-school program at my elementary school. These programs help students strengthen their academic skills, develop socially and emotionally, and stay engaged in safe, enriching environments."

"It is both shocking and deeply disheartening that the federal government is withholding more than $60 million in critical funding that supports after-school programs and English Language Learner (ELL) services."

This morning, Vicki Kreidel spoke at the @battlebornprogress.bsky.social press conference about the illegal freezing of over $61 million in federal funds by the trump administration.

“Just weeks after Nevada’s governor and Legislature approved a mere $2 increase in per-pupil funding, forcing districts to confront immediate budget shortfalls, this federal freeze creates yet another burden,” Dawn Etcheverry, president of the NSEA, said in a statement.

Pro-public education advocates will continue to use every avenue available to push back against this anti-public education administration. The harmful and perplexing decisions being made puts essential after-school programs, teacher training, and support for migrant students at serious risk.

AB584 earns a big red “See Me After Class!” from educators. When we demanded Gov. Lombardo #PassThePlan to fully fund our schools, he dismissed us, saying we can no longer accept a lack of funding for poor school performance, and then offered a $2 increase to per pupil funding.

It's fitting that on the day Gov. Lombardo's education bill is heard, a court struck down the executive order to dismantle the Dept of Education. These aren’t parallel events. They expose a coordinated ideology, from DC to Carson City: blame educators, defund public schools, & brand it as reform.

SB318 addresses the profit-motive in Nevada’s charter school system. Currently, EMOs are largely unaccountable and not transparent as to their operations or performance. For profit companies like Academica take millions of Nevada tax dollars. #NVLeg

EMOs exploit legal loopholes by setting up nonprofit boards that function as mere fronts, allowing EMOs to control school operations & finances. They prioritize profit over student outcomes, leading to cost-cutting measures that can result in lower teacher salaries, high turnovers, & fewer services.
