Rikaa is one of the oldest dragons in the story, so he is given a LOT of defense and respect even by the dragon council. He’s old enough to remember dragons that only existed in myth to others, so he is important for history keeping.

Oh, I think I’m probably pretty darn rotten to Jai. He was used as a weapon for the longest of all of my main human-made dragon characters, and he struggles daily with the trauma of it all. And I keep putting the little dragon he sees as a baby sister in mortal peril. Oops.

When I was a child, teachers sat the best girl students next to disruptive boy students. The girls were responsible for keeping the boys calm so that the teacher could continue teaching. This sort of emotional regulation by proxy, using girls and women to calm boys and men, still happens.

Zoe knows that spending two decades in space is a death sentence. Even if she survives the long trip, the health effects of long periods of zero gravity are completely unknown. She and her crew know going in that they are guinea pigs, but it’s worth it for first contact. (Maybe) #writesky

The antagonist in the fifth and sixth Scaleshifter books is so well-liked they kind of accidentally became a cult leader 😂

Eldara’s parents constantly travel, so she has friends in the three “big” centers of the continent: the dragons, the mountaineers, and the cityfolk. Cuno, who lives on the outskirts of the city, is the one who actually sticks with her as dreams of adventure get real.

The dragons have a phrase for family but also for young dragons (and humans) who are close enough to be taken under their wing: nuau. It literally means “little one,” but the implications are much deeper.

Eldara is organized in a way that only makes sense to her. Her room and her bag are full of sea monster parts, crushed dragon scales, tinctures, and magic bits and bobs. SHE knows where everything is, but gods help anyone who tries to follow the logic of her madness 😂

Spoilers for the third Scaleshifter: Alan does end up imprisoned by a village of dragon hunters. He is able to escape on his own, but first, he wants to get Caleb in trouble too and to torment him while they’re in prison together. He wants Caleb to admit they’re more alike than different.

Islana is just getting back to her old routines after a period of mourning. She makes her food, tends the house, and goes to the old faery door to keep the path clear and clean up the offerings

Being part dragon, my Scaleshifter has all the same senses as a dragon. Better hearing and vision and smell than a human, etc. it’s part of what makes the transformation dangerous; sensory overload like that can drive a person mad!

I’m sure it’s sheer coincidence that my latest Scaleshifter WIP is about how dangerous more power can be in already-powerful hands. Or that Mermaids of Europa is about “progress“ without regard for people. Nooo bearing on the world right now at aaaall. #writesky
