LOS OLVIDADOS, which premiered in Mexico City on November 9, 1950, and was pulled from theaters after just three days, marked a turning point in Luis Buñuel’s career. I wrote about how it came to be for

Life Is Hard, Brutish, and Short in Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados

To my knowledge, the earliest instance of hooded men in an American film is in the Edison short THE WHITE CAPS from 1905. It depicts a vigilante group in pillowcase hoods who are primarily concerned with protecting the women in their community from abusive spouses, a theme that would come up again.

Thanks to the Criterion Channel's "Georges Méliès: Fairy Tales in Color" series, I have now seen 1900's JOAN OF ARC. In it, two white-hooded inquisitors attend Joan's trial and execution, making them the earliest hooded folk I'm aware of on film.

Oh, hey. Just noticed I made it to 500 followers. Certainly took long enough, but that’s what I get for posting so sporadically. I should take this as a sign to restart my “Hooded Man/Men of the Day/Week” feature I used to do over at the other place. Maybe it will get some traction here now.

Re-watched TRANSYLVANIA 6-5000 tonight for reasons, and I'm frankly amazed by how much of this I managed to suppress in the decades since my first (and only) exposure to it. So much painfully drawn-out, unfunny comedy. I'm embarrassed for everybody in it.

A curious moment from this year's Godzilla Fest short, in which the big guy comes snout to snout with his likeness on top of a building. It is a brief distraction, however, as right after this he's struck by missiles fired from a helicopter.
