It's a curious thing that The Science of Learning has everything to say about memory management and nothing to say about motivation. It's implied that the purpose of learning in school is memorization for the test, not questioning at all whether learning for the test is even the best way to learn.

When I started #Ungrading 2.5 years ago, I knew it was going it was going to be a game changer for our classroom. What I didn't realize at the time was just how much it was going to humanize it too.

A5. Grades are discussed twice a year when I'm required to post them. At all other times we discuss developmental targets and where Ss are in relation to the targets. We use a grade translation chart to translate to a grade. Targets are updated at the start of each unit. #UngradingChat

A4. I found the key to getting them invovled is having a framework they can use to discuss their responses. Using that framework, we do regular checkpoints that are self-assessed and annotated by the students. Peer assessment and collaborative work, as well as conferencing. 1/2 #ungradingchat
