This is a far right argument which blames racial hatred on immigrants instead of racists.

In Polish, when someone writes a lot of words of vague, boring, meaningless ramble, we call it "lanie wody" - "pouring water". Seems particularly on the nose these days.

Might as well post here too: I'm urgently looking for a London sublet for June. Open to anything between 1-5 weeks. Can also look after plants, pets etc. Please let me know if anyone has a room going.

I just saw a blue tick (you can guess from which party) refer to the local elections as "Britain's midterms". I'm generally very against depriving people of their citizenship but maybe there are some exceptions...

What an upside down world when one of the reasons that Orban is rejected is because of foreign interference not just from Russia, but also from US of A. Europe says "thanks, absolutely not" to both. 🍾🏆

Although I don't have high hopes for Péter Magyar, it's still pretty beautiful to see the fall of the Orbán regime. I can think of a few friends of his who now need to follow him to the bin 🚮 No kings/tyrants - not in Europe, not in the US, not anywhere.

BIG day today in Hungary, but at least in the short run, the choice is between authoritarianism and democracy, with liberal democracy at the backburner.

Even if Victor Orbán is ousted on Sunday, Hungary’s return to liberal democracy is not guaranteed | Gabriela Greilinger and Cas Mudde
Challenger Péter Magyar is no progressive – and after 16 years of creeping authoritarianism, the PM has embedded Fidesz in the Hungarian state, say Gabriela Greilinger and Cas Mudde of the University ...

But fundamentally, this shows why first past the post isn’t fit for purpose. If the government doesn’t introduce proportional voting, a far right party could win the next general election outright on a minority of the vote.

A party making videos in the languages of migrant communities is good and makes me like them more. It doesn't mean they don't understand English. It's just nice to be thought about and addressed in the language you speak at home.

There is a fascinating difference in how Labour treats voters lost to the Greens versus those lost to Reform. Those voting for Reform are to be catered to and apologised for, whereas those who’ve gone Green (a party whose platform is much closer to Labour’s!) are belittled and mocked.

I'm seeing more and more takes on here that are like "men shouldn't be allowed to look after children because they're predators." Gen Z are woke-ing themselves into "it's a woman's job to stay at home with the kids, feministly."

After a long campaign including a citizens' initiative with 600,000+ signatures, Spain has regularised half a million undocumented people. That's what's possible with a strong pro-migrant movement and a government that's not disgusted at the thought of basic progressive values.

Spain plans to give 500,000 undocumented migrants legal status
The process will be available to foreign nationals without a criminal record who can prove they lived in Spain for five months prior to 31 December 2025.

Sigh... Trump is an imperialist criminal doing an imperialist coup and it's extremely evil. But not all of the Venezuelans who are celebrating are Sabine Mengele-Eichman. They're also people who experienced poverty, food shortages and political persecution.

Immigration salience has less to do with aggregate Immigration numbers than - visibility of boats & asylum > visas - general vibes about integration - elite cues from media & political discourse in shaping public perceptions This is more true when immigration is falling then when it is rising
