An excellent feature on the wansei, Taiwan-born Japanese who were expelled after World War 2. Although the word "repatriation" is used, for some wansei the outbound trip from Keelung was the first time they had left home. Not all were able to integrate into post-war Japan.

Three big takeaways from Taiwan's recalls: 1. Even though the pro-recall movement was highly mobilized, and the KMT efforts to recall DPP legislators flopped, blue voter networks are not dead or apathetic. KMT voters can and will still mobilize for their party when need be.

Taiwanâs current support for Israel harkens back to a darker time in history when it supported brutal right-wing dictatorships in Latin America. Back then, Taiwan was also a brutal right-wing dictatorship. Now it is not, and its insistence on self-determination and liberal ideas should reflect it.
