“There’s a car coming but they don’t care.” Says it all. Frames pedestrians as the problem when they’re just behaving normally. It’s not that they 'don’t care', it exposes the expectation that people should yield to the car even in places where the car is the guest or simply in the way of city life.

These questions aren’t an attack on driving. They’re a lens. Essential things rarely insist on taking up more space than they need. When a journey needs speed, bulk or a sense of aspirational status to feel valid, you’ve already crossed from necessity into desire.

One of the benefits of a default urban/village 20mph limit is that it unlocks initiatives which would not be possible in higher speed 30mph streets. Wales is planning that local authorities can install simple and cheaper pedestrian crossings at side roads to align with Highway Code.

This car is probably very well designed for a specific niche purpose...and no, I don't mean the school run.

Using an edge case to frame the scheme as misuse is disingenuous and feeds the view that cycling is a hobby, not transport. Far bigger tax breaks for cars never get the same scrutiny and cost the Treasury far more… although, I never seem to see a car on the road outside office hours 😜

Plaid Cymru safely beating Reform in Caerphilly...against all the odds, if you believed the media, says a lot. Too many people mistake the loud minority in social media comments for the mood of the country. Nice to wake up and realise Welsh communities aren’t turning fascist or right-wing after all.

Like religion...we’re indoctrinated to believe there’s a god and that Wales and Scotland can’t survive without England. Truth is, that’s a big fib. Strip it back and you see it plainly. England needs Scotland and Wales for power, water and a lot more besides.

A really progressive move by @cardiffcouncil.bsky.social and very welcome. It’d have even more impact if they also tackled pavement parking that’s where the real everyday danger and obstruction still happens.

Feels like the start of a real shift. If Reform keeps sweeping up the disillusioned and misled right while the Greens speak to the progressive and hopeful left, maybe the old two-party system’s finally getting a reboot.

This is why I despair sometimes. Councils keep pandering to motorists, even though in inner-city high-density areas fewer people drive than don’t. Most of the cars in the video are single occupancy with drivers heading back to the suburbs and turning local neighbourhoods into traffic sewers.

We’re led to believe everyone drives but more people don’t than do. Yet drivers get the lion’s share of subsidies and space. Meanwhile non-drivers endure expensive public transport which is often delayed by the congestion caused by the very motorists demanding unfettered access to our cities.

Fuel duty frozen again but it’s not active travelers getting the help as it's going to those who can afford to lease their cars. Meanwhile on public transport, fares are up, services are cut...but drivers get a subsidy to keep burning fuel.

My niece is this age. It’s hard not to feel this one. This isn’t just about one driver. It’s about a justice system that doesn’t treat reckless driving seriously. People die. Love to see it. Imagine this on certain main streets in Cardiff. Buses gliding through, clean air and people choosing to walk, cycle and shop local. You’d still be able to drive but just not use it as a shortcut. Streets like these could work better for businesses public transport and pedestrians.

@cardiffcouncil.bsky.social. Not sure if you're responsible for the sign on the Talybont path, but it blocks cyclists’ view of people exiting the footpath. This morning I was careful, but still startled cyclists as I stepped out. The sign creates a blind spot and could lead to a collision.

Strong APPG report. Shows how cheap imports, vague regs and gig economy pressures have created a mess...and the public ends up blaming all e-bikes but not all e-bikes are the problem. Regulation won’t kill micromobility. It’ll fix the confusion and make active travel safer and fairer for everyone.

'Petrol’s so expensive!' say drivers, idling their engine while scrolling WhatsApp. In real terms, UK petrol is the cheapest it’s been since 2001. Fuel duty is frozen. The government is losing £3bn a year. But sure, keep burning your expensive fuel while parked...cant'be that pricey after all.

Shared paths aren’t active travel infrastructure. They’re a fob-off. If that’s all your council is offering, it’s because they don’t want to inconvenience drivers. They’re not building for you. They’re building around you. Be annoyed at them and not at people choosing to cycle.

After Liverpool, it's worth saying it plainly. Cars are the most accessible weapons in the world. Common, deadly and legally fuzzy. You can injure or kill with intent, neglect or incompetence... often with fewer consequences than using a traditional weapon.

SUVs (Seriously Ugly Vehicles) are causing more problems than they ever solved, whatever those were. The Land Rover Defender (see Offender) leads a trend of bloated, dangerous cars making streets less safe, cities less liveable where drivers feel powerful for all the wrong reasons.

Today, the Government launches plans to fast-track driverless vehicle trials in the UK. One of the companies involved says London presents a big challenge: “It has seven times more jaywalkers than San Francisco.” Except… it doesn't. 🧵

The Dutch call it a moordstrookje: 'murder strip'. Painted lanes. Parked cars. A potential death sentence disguised as infrastructure.

Really interesting. I'd also add to that social media often amplifies a vocal minority (mainly critics) while the silent majority who voted local elected leaders are overlooked. There’s irony in councillors over-correcting toward those loud voices rather than sticking to their mandate.

Friend of mine was excited to show off their new car and I was happy for them but I dampened the fun when they said '0–60 is this, and acceleration is that', and I replied 'But the speed limit is 20, and your average is 7 mph on the commute.' Maybe these Kei style cars are all most people need.
