Unlike the more drab European starling, African starlings evolved unique hollow, flattened melanosomes that can be stacked to different depths to produce a rainbow of chromatic coloration. This "cortex thickness" tunes each feather to a specific wavelength of light.

All birds have special rod-shaped structures called melanosomes in their feathers that contain melanin, giving them brown, black or grey coloration. But the African starlings use them to create STRUCTURAL color through iridescence caused by thin-film interference. (📷: Torben Dehlholm)

This is (I think) a Greater Blue-Eared Starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus) & the amazing chrome job is their super-power. They've evolved to manipulate light in VERY specific ways, attracting mates, intimidating rivals. Let's look at the nanostructures that bring this bling into being.
