This looks consistent with (official) reports of 10-20 m run-ups in Kamchatka/Okhotsk. With complex topo/bathy short wavelength features like the waves seen here can develop and superimpose on the long period tsunami. We've seen this in other places. Time will tell if this can be verified

CRESCENT's first Cores to Code program is off to a great start! The group started in Eugene and made their way down to Arcata, CA where they will be spending the next 3 weeks. They made geologic stops along the way to learn about the geology of Cascadia.

This morning, we kicked off our first technical short course in Seattle, WA: Machine Learning. Over the next three days participants will learn to develop AI-aided earthquake catalogs through three key steps: event detection, association, and location.

Today is the anniversary of the Pacific Northwest's worst modern earthquake, the April 13th, 1949 mag 6.7 near Olympia. 8 people died, many were injured, and millions of $$ (in 1940's money) in damage. It was a "slab event" in the subducted plate at ~50 km depth.

Station NPW is ~250 km from the hypocenter. For that acceleration pulse to get to the site when it does rupture needs to be trucking along at ~5 km/s. Shear wave speeds at ~10km depth according to Litho1.0 are 3.46 km/s. The rupture is most likely, realy really, supreshear.

This is the Network of the Americas (NOTA). Upwards of 1000 high quality GPS stations used to monitor all big active faults that produce the biggest most damaging earthquakes as well as volcanoes from Mt. St. Helens to Yellowstone, etc. Every single on of them is grant funded.

Life maxim: When you hit 40 you have at least 2 injuries, always, all the time. If one gets better, you acquire a new one, you always have 2. Life becomes about managing those injuries so you can remain as active as you want to be.

A massive earthquake will one day rattle the Pacific Northwest. Minutes to hours later, a surge of seawater will swallow the land. No one knows when.

Earthquake hazards of the PNW. Damage to buildings is likely at MMI>6 – that's every major city, yikes. Note the discontinuity at the CAN/US border due to different methodologies used by each countries agencies. The tsunami estimates are for a scenario used by OR for evacuation maps, scary stuff!
