I remember first getting into these fellas through the mix tapes that Frank Gossner would make for his legendary Voodoo Funk blog around 2006-7. The thrill of hearing all this unearthed jewels floating on a sea of surface noise. Those were the days.

Extremely funky, joyous stuff. Sounds like a party.

#albumshuffle Day 385: Nobuo Yamada - Vase Echoes [ABH, 2004] Sound artist from Japan sticks a microphone inside a vase and makes recordings from various locales including a roadside, on the back of a motorcycle, hanging from the roof of a shop and in a sink under a running tap.

Some great stuff this year. I am ashamed to say I've still not played Gossip (or quite a few of the other picks listed for that matter) but Lonesome Road, Blues Brothers 2025 and of course, Lemoncholia were real fun.

#albumshuffle Day 384: Aube - Stratodive [Bandaged Hand Produce, 1996] The single source used for this Aube cassette is a voltage controlled oscillator. With a bit of processing and overdubbing the end result is a howling wall of noise that's similar to standing outside in a strong gale.

#albumshuffle Day 378: Guitar Crusher - Blast From The Past [Gaztelupeko Hotsak, 2011] In the running for coolest stage name for a bluesman. Born in rural North Carolina, moved to New York when he was 15. Developed one hell of a voice as a gospel singer. This collects of all seven of his 1960s 45s.

Feeling much lighter now as first fully playable version of my qbj3 map is done. Hard to find a cool angle to take out of bounds screenshot though haha. Now back to adding extra stuff for the last 4 days remaining.

#albumshuffle Day 377: Various - Eccentric Soul: The Cuca Label [Numero Group, 2024] Cuca operated out of Sauk City, Wisconsin from 1959 to the mid 70s putting out a variety of records from local artists - mostly polka, folk and jazz, but they also had a line in R&B and soul 45s.

i'm still playing through the bonus missions of powerwash simulator as my empty-brain comfort game and the ladders drive me mad as they're so awkward and sticky.

in this house first person ladders were solved with the release of half life. end of story!

#albumshuffle Day 376: Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno - Anthem of the Space [Ektro Records, 2005] The forty five minute title track is a slow spacey raga built around a simple repeated riff with the usual electric guitar improvisation, ufo synth and two lads going mental on the drums.

#albumshuffle Day 373: Tonchi Pickles - gadgetronico! [pokopen recordings, 2011] One man pop project from Fukuoka. All synths and samples to make some fun dub, techno and otherwise playful boingy music. A lot of stylistic variety if you enjoy a VGM-style polka or a bit of tabla and Arabic flavour.

Hard drive prices have gone up a lot. I have a feeling I should be buying sooner rather than later.

#albumshuffle Day 372: T. Mikawa - Cloud Carpet Bombing [Neurec, 2022] Solo noise album from one of the big dogs. Honestly, most tracks are pleasant listening that faded into the background for me. The stable background drone/roar is sort of like standing in the middle of a stream. An angry stream.

#albumshuffle Day 371: Various - Like Nashville In Naija [Comb & Razor Sound, 2017] A blessed double LP compilation of country music from Nigeria. Mostly recorded in the late 70s and early 80s, some have a little highlife flavour and more than a little cheesy keyboard/synth action, but it's great.

To say it has been a challenging couple of weeks would be underselling it. Think we have a way forward now, barring any black swan events like....

#albumshuffle Day 370: John Tilbury & Oren Ambarchi - The Just Reproach [Black Truffle, 2013] A delicate improvised performance at Cafe Oto. Tilbury contibutes soft chords and short note clusters on piano, allowing them to naturally decay. Sensitive, patient play as with his contributions to AMM.

#albumshuffle Day 369: The Pine Hill Haints - Welcome to the Midnight Opry [K, 2011] The Haints are a perennial favourite. They play what they call Alabama Ghost Music; drawing from folk, country, cajun and rock and roll with a punk edge. Washtub, saw, fiddle, banjo and accordion alongside guitar.

Still waiting for a boutique label to pick up the rights to Baby Police or Magic Lizard.

This is mostly an album of noisy garage rock & jams with frequent experimental detours.

#albumshuffle Day 366: Alexander Hawkins Ensemble - Step Wide, Step Deep [Babel, 2014] Fun album from a London sextet led by pianist Alexander Hawkins. Deftly straddles the boundary of standard contemporary jazz idioms, blues etc and the freely improvised. Nice melodies and chaotic free sections.
