#albumshuffle Day 336: Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem [Tzadik, 1995] Ruins were a duo of drummer Tatsuya Yoshida and a rotating bassist, in this instance Ryuichi Masuda. Mostly short, manic and extremely dense prog/jazz fusion compositions with singing in an imagined language à la Zeuhl.

Guo Yongzhang is a partially sighted master of the art. Recorded in the 80s.

#albumshuffle Day 329: Creekbed Carter Hogan - St. Good Riddance [not on label, 2021] Debut album from a remarkable folk singer-songwriter, recorded during the pandemic in the Ozarks. Beautiful songs augmented by the chorus of birds, insects and the great outdoors. They have a lovely voice.

#albumshuffle Day 328: Fred Van Hove - Church Organ [FMP, 1980] Free improvised solo on the organ at St Peter's Church in Sinzig. Really attacks the organ with great energy, often dissonant with dense note clusters. Finale 79 utilises its full dynamic range to make thunderous sheets of noise.

#albumshuffle Day 326: Various - 青春歌年鑑 '61 BEST 30 [EMI, 2002] Starting in 2000, the major Japanese labels coordinated a series of compilations of popular music by year called the Youth Song Yearbook. This one such release from the second run released in 2002 that covered the 1960s.

#albumshuffle Day 324: Kuunatic - Wheels Of Ömon [Glitterbeat, 2025] Interesting female trio blending psych rock with gagaku instruments with science fiction lyrics describing of the natural history and mythology another planet. All three sing creating harmonies and ritual chants. Pretty decent.

#albumshuffle Day 323: Toshimaru Nakamura & Sachiko M - un [meme, 1998] Early onkyo effort from Sachiko M with her empty sampler & sine waves and Toshimaru Nakamura's no-input mixing board. Despite the ultra-minimal palette of sounds, this is a surprisingly dense and varied listen.

#albumshuffle Day 322: Magma - Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh [Vertigo, 1973] I remember getting this album as a 13 year old exploring prog and being bewildered & repelled by it. The folly of youth! Masterpiece of weird operatic Zeuhl. The chant on Kobaïa is de Hündïn is always foremost in my mind.

Powerwash simulator is a game people claim is ideal to play while listening to a podcast, watching a stream or an interminable three hour long youtube video essay. Wrong, it's a game that demands total focus. The only sounds I need are varying jets of water hitting metal, plastic and stone. Ding.

#albumshuffle Day 320: Wendy Eisenberg - Time Machine [HEC, 2017] I was introduced to Wendy Eisenberg through Its Shape Is Your Touch, an album of acoustic guitar compositions oscilating between folk, american primitive and Derek Bailey. Listening to album was a suprise as it's odd bedroom pop.

#albumshuffle Day 318: Toni Iordache - A Virtuoso Of The Cymbalom Vol. 1 [Electrecord, 1996] Compilation drawn from three records put out in the mid 1970s to early 80s. Remarkable precision and beautiful ornamentation as he works through all these doinas and ballads, often at breakneck pace.

#albumshuffle Day 317: The New Blockaders - Live at Sonic City [2019, Cold Spring] CD & DVD of The New Blockaders final live performance in Belgium. Seemingly starts with a performance of Moonlight Sonata, but the DVD shows it's a recording as a bloke silently mangles a piano with a claw hammer.

There seemed to be a pair of crows atop of every chimney stack lining my commute today. Love is in the air clearly.

Opens with an impassioned rendition of Bella Ciao where both saxophone players cut loose & ends with an extremely Coltrane-esque dedication to Angela Davis.

#albumshuffle Day 313: Juke/19 - Ninety Seven Circles [not on label, 1981] One of the four albums put out by artist Shinro Ohtake's short-lived experimental band. Incredibly distorted no wave/punk compositions that occasionally veer into industrial noise. Easily their most straightforward album.

Think I've said it before but being an improvising vocalist takes an immense amount of courage. While freely improvised music certainly isn't popular, 'unusual' vocal performances seem to provoke a much stronger negative response for whatever reason. Perhaps it's the immediacy. Massively unfair tbh.

#albumshuffle Day 312: Taku Sugimoto & Minami Saeki - listening to improvisation 2 [self-released, 2023] Lengthy improvised duet where Taku Sugimoto plucks out individual notes and chords on an electric guitar while Minami Saeki sings, trills and hums, often holding notes for long periods.

#albumshuffle Day 309: Lol Coxhill & Alex Ward - Old Sights, New Sounds [Incus, 2011] Duets between Coxhill on soprano sax and Ward on clarinet. Loose, almost chatty free improvisation. They play well together; neither voice is dominant as they follow various musical threads and explore together.

#albumshuffle Day 308: The Lappetites - Before The Libretto [Quecksilber, 2005] Four female musicians from different countries making glitchy laptop music. Tongue twisters, minimal beats, multi-lingual spoken word parts, and pretty layers of electronic noise. Elements of EAI, drone loops, etc.
