Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17

Golden Dome dangers: An arms control expert explains how Trump’s missile defense threatens to make the US less safe
Missile defense systems are nothing new. History shows that even if they work as advertised – a big if – they’re a bad idea if your aim is to make your country safer from nuclear attack.

OMB last week released some more info on the FY26 budget request (though not for DoD). But we get the NNSA request. And...Woah, Nellie. The "base" weapons activities request is $20.74 billion. Plus $4.8 billion more in assumed reconciliation resources. Total: $24.856 billion.

Among nuke issues in UK defense review: - ÂŁ15B for new warhead - Don't extend new SSBN life; design another one - Potentially increase UK participation in NATO's nuclear mission - Maximize US-UK relationship "as a force multiplier in renewing deterrence"

1/ Very important signal that UK might return to air-launched tactical nuclear forces by buying F-35A and participating in US nuclear sharing arrangements. There had been indications that UK was preparing to be able to host B61 tactical nuclear weapons.

The IRS was a simple test for DOGE: was it really interested in efficiency and state capacity? If so, you support the tax enforcement, the biggest ROI in govt. Or did it want to minimize parts of the state that bothered billionaires? We have our answer.
