The distinction and obsession between pro/semi/token markets in SFFH is, I'd argue, damaging. Writers shouldn't feel as though their work isn't valid (or even great) because it doesn't appear in one of the big ones. That is the wrong measure of success.

But, look, that's not to say that just because something is published _anywhere_ that it means it's good. But there are clunkers in EVERY market (even pro, often pro). But there is also _great_ writing that simply isn't marketable. Write the weird stuff as well as you can. You'll find your readers.

I'm not sure if it helps, but I hope that people writing don't think that their publication in semi-pro or token markets mean _less_ than getting into the "big ones". I've been peripherally involved in the indie lit scene for a couple years now and the talent represented there is staggering.

If you generate a book-length blob of text every day, and it takes me six months to write a SHORT STORY I still win the race because I care about art and not just volume of words.

I believe it, too. Here's the thing, if publishers and distributors are indifferent (or actively cheering for) the race to the bottom, then alternative signals of quality will surely become salient. Collectives like @sauutiverse.bsky.social, or individual editors, could become effective signals.
