in 2026 i'm going to write little essays about skateboarding and life and send them by email to people who'd like to receive them. substack is very bad, metrics are death, and i'd like to write less publicly about these things. DM or respond with an email addy if you'd like to be included!

Just send emails. If you're a literary journal, have a website. Your engagement numbers are a sham, man. Get off.

San Francisco: The city where skateboarders won?
The city has spent around $9 million on skate infrastructure in the last decade. It’s hard to believe it used to jail people for skating on the sidewalk.

Just sent off a 15,000-word editorial letter to a client with a novel that's going to absolutely rule. Cannot stress how much I enjoy doing developmental edits for authors, how fortunate I feel to be trusted in this way and hurl myself into their projects.

NEWS --> Three men who were in the van with the victim of the ICE shooting in Texas are potential witnesses, but they're now under pressure to self-deport, a rep for the families tells me. They remain in detention even as ICE's story falters. Details in this piece:

i got into a bit of an argument last year with a Known Author for arguing that today's college profs absolutely must redefine "cheating" rather than slot LLM-aided essay writing into the same old categories and procedures. professors simply aren't paid for this shit.

You have not discovered contemporary masculinity until you've hung out with a radically disparate and intergenerational group of dudes and women and trans skaters hugging and saying I love you after one of us switch heelflips a few steps.

not for nothing, but a good thing about skateboarding contests is everyone pretty much accepts that they're rigged rather than believing in a fantasy of fairness despite a constant deluge of evidence otherwise!

Last night a really fine and generous fella provided me with a copy of my 2009 novel to sign, and the book felt strange in my hand. When I opened it up, the back cover said it was printed in Las Vegas in 2025. Were I someone whose agent always responds to my little questions, I'd ask her about this.

Once you have experienced the feeling of being able to publish whenever you want to, about whatever you want, for whoever you want, you may never want to do it any other way. I enjoy being published by other people too, but it usually has less direct benefit overall.

oh man, you know who else might recognize this playbook? the plant biologists who developed GMO crops only to face pure and totally unscientific roadblocks at every step of the way, thereby killing technology that would sure be helpful as drought and climate disaster take hold of the whole globe!
