In a world of inexorable Magic set releases and delinquent Avatar Studios releases, it makes perfect sense that the just-revealed Avatar set is slated to come out nearly a year before the long-awaited Avatar movie. 🙃

I'm guessing this'll be my last Vintage Cube post for a bit (if only because of regression to the mean). But for now, I'm 17-1 in single elims on MTGO! (cc: @fireshoes.bsky.social) It's nice to know that even when I regress, I can trust my read of the format. Maybe it's time to write an article :)

In most formats, I love drafting and playing even when I lose. Vintage Cube feels more like the gym: I follow a conventional routine and try to do my best—doing poorly would defeat the purpose. But I like the gym, so maybe I can enjoy Vintage Cube—rather, nonblue creature decks in single elims—too?

I'm famously a Vintage Cube hater, but I played a couple single elims on MTGO recently and enjoyed them! Deck 1 was borin—er, boros, but it went 3-0 and I don't mind winning 🙃 Deck 2 was more innovative, featuring 3 toolboxes with SFM, Saga, and Gearhulk! It lost in the finals but did beat boros 🎭

Yesterday I got to draft 3x Khans of Tarkir in paper for the second time—the first was Temur with @stephenkonefal.bsky.social! 😃 In honor of @combatiblewombat.bsky.social, I drafted a nice BUG. I wound up losing the finals to the @themantisrider.bsky.social's namesake, but I was happy with my play!

Opponent: *names the room for our match "a Finite amount of skill"* Me: Wait, I don't think we're supposed to play Opponent: What do you mean? Me: I only have an infinitesimal amount of skill Opponent: LMAO

Me: *After a chaos draft* Huh, Temporal Eddy is a weird one. It's from Time Spiral, so I wonder if that Gatherer user Missile_Penguin posted about the cards it references. And sure enough, they did! Man, I miss Gatherer 🥲

After unwittingly plateauing in chaos draft, I feel I’ve improved by recently drafting what I’ve nicknamed “perfect decks.” It’s a misnomer of course—every deck has flaws and can lose, so what do I mean by this? (1/2)
