i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.

Constantly struck by how good academia is at teaching people to be critical of texts, but how poor at engaging with the beauty of the text. This suspicious mode of thinking, discussing art seems often to be a way of avoiding having that unsettling, profound encounter with the weird beauty of art.

Recently read One Day, Everyone Will Have Been Against This, by Omar El Akkad, about the the horrors being carried out against Gaza. An incredibly powerful book filled with passages like this one.

Currently reading Dorothea Lasky's The Shinning. This is one of my favorite poems from the collection--"High Ceilings."

Recently rewatched Morgiana (1972), a Gothic/Decadent psychological melodrama directed by Juraj Herz and starring Iva Janzurova in the dual role of two sisters. It's visually stunning, as if Aubrey Beardsley had been in charge of the set design, and has overtones of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Watched The Loveless (1981), a laconic, highly stylized mood piece about a group of bikers visiting a small town in the 50s, and Kathryn Bigelow's directorial debut. There's definitely a Scorpio Rising influence here, and William Dafoe is great as the charming but psychotic lead. Really recommended.

Agree but also the paradox is the mores specific fiction is, often the more appeal it has. Austen, Melville, Morrison, Marquez, Kafka, etc. These authors wrote about very specific times and places (real or invented) and often in "weird" styles... yet endure and are read around the world.

The "starving artist" myth is one promoted by people in power to romanticize the forced austerity of artists and writers -- meaning, to convince creators that being paid less than they are worth is simply part of the expected narrative when it shouldn't be. (See also: the WGA strike.)
