A new investigation identifies the Netherlands as the main gateway for products from illegal Israeli settlements entering the EU. Nobody should be surprised. Governments have known for years that settlement goods are mislabelled and continue to reach European consumers.

As shadow rapporteur on the EU-Indonesia trade agreement, I have pushed to keep human rights and environmental protections at the heart of our partnership. Reports that screenings of a documentary on deforestation in Papua are disrupted by the military underline why this cannot be an afterthought.

Leather was included in the EUDR because evidence showed it is linked to deforestation. That evidence has not disappeared. Removing leather from the regulation would be incoherent and risks creating a loophole in the EU's efforts to tackle global deforestation.

The sanctions agreed today are long overdue and necessary. At the same time, as long as we don't make use of our trade tools, we are not doing enough. The Council can and should do more - stop trade with illegal settlements and suspend the Association Agreement with Israel.

Energy independence is the only way to have a strong and independent Europe. We must put an end to the fossil fuel era. Green leaders from all over Europe are discussing the way forward and how to push for more EU independence at all levels of government, from Mayors to MEPs.
