The blockbuster horror film "Sinners" features the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in a short, impactful scene. For some Choctaw, it is the first time they've heard their language and seen their culture accurately portrayed on screen.

I’ve told the story many times. Now @katemasur.bsky.social and I have filed it in federal court: Free Black Americans were first to recognize BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP in the US. When denied it, they fought to secure it. They show us what the 14th Amendment meant and what it meant to live without it.

Well that’s that then. I had nuff problems with this show, but it had some standout moments. At least I got to see a visually stunning walk through the rings at Rhuidean and visions of the Breaking and the Age of Legends. Will be grateful for that.

And while we’re in these dark and profoundly stupid times, might I suggest Martha S. Jones’s work—highlighting how African Americans used the courts to argue for the idea of birthright citizenship long before the Civil War as a means to establish their status as free citizens.

good thread on how the 14th amendment during Reconstruction also helped establish citizenship for *free* African Americans, whose status remained ambiguous at best—including in several free Northern states where race-based disfranchisement had been common.

Yes! Kai Ashanti Wilson’s work influenced me on many levels. And the incomparable @tananarivedue.bsky.social is one of the reasons I write. When I think of others like @edenroyce.bsky.social also writing in this genre, I’m happy #sinners is giving Black Southern Gothic horror the light it deserves

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect.
